Logan Henderson Makes Chicago Earn Everything

Logan Henderson presents Chicago with an awkward problem at the worst possible time. Milwaukee’s rookie has allowed opponents a .181 batting average and .569 OPS across 76 1/3 innings, while striking out 86 against only 14 walks. More importantly for Thursday, he has not allowed more than three earned runs in any of his 19 career starts.

Chicago counters with Kevin Gausman, whose 4.52 ERA disguises stronger underlying strikeout and walk numbers but not the contact Milwaukee can exploit. The question is whether Gausman can keep the Brewers from extending innings long enough for Henderson’s run prevention to become decisive.

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s line makes Milwaukee -111, with Chicago -102. Pick: Milwaukee Brewers -111.

Henderson Keeps Shrinking the Target

Henderson’s 0.83 WHIP gives Chicago unusually little room for wasted opportunities. He has struck out 86 in 76 1/3 innings, and opponents have produced only a .508 OPS against him over his most recent 94 batters faced.

That matters because Milwaukee does not need Henderson to manufacture a shutdown performance from scratch. His command repeatedly keeps innings from expanding.

Pat Murphy’s recent comments explain why Milwaukee trusts the rookie in this spot. With the Brewers approaching September in control of their postseason position, Murphy has resisted allowing his young roster to think beyond the immediate job: “You can’t divide their attention on things like that.” Henderson is part of the rotation Milwaukee is counting on through that stretch.

Gausman Has Less Margin Behind Him

Gausman enters with 156 strikeouts against 43 walks across 155 1/3 innings, a considerably better foundation than his 8-11 record suggests. His 3.60 FIP also sits well below his 4.52 ERA.

His recent physical concern appears to have subsided. Gausman left an August 18 start because of cramping in his non-pitching thumb, but he described the problem as a cramp rather than a structural injury.

Chicago’s larger complication is what happens after him. Dansby Swanson remains on the injured list with an oblique injury, while the pitching staff is missing multiple arms, including Hunter Harvey, Phil Maton, Ben Brown and Cade Horton.

The MLB Playoffs Betting Guide provides additional context for September games where rotation depth and bullpen availability increasingly influence how managers handle the middle innings.

Milwaukee Can Win Without the Homer

Milwaukee has hit only 130 home runs, yet enters Thursday with 704 runs and a .340 on-base percentage. That combination matters against Gausman because the Brewers don’t need one mistake over the middle of the plate to create an inning. They can reach base, extend counts and force him to keep executing.

The risk is Chicago’s offense. The Cubs have scored 751 runs with 197 homers, giving them considerably more immediate damage potential if Henderson’s command slips.

But Henderson’s combination of strikeouts, scarce walks and suppressed contact gives Milwaukee the cleaner path through the first six innings. At essentially even money, that is enough.

Milwaukee Brewers -111 is the betting lean.
