Learner Tien Faces Gael Monfils’ Wildest Variable

Learner Tien has already seen the problem Gael Monfils can create. Less than a month ago in Montreal, Tien won their first meeting 6-3, 0-6, 6-3. The middle set is the warning. Monfils can still change the temperature of a match frighteningly quickly, and Tien now has to control those swings across five sets rather than three.

Tien enters Thursday’s US Open second round after dismantling Nuno Borges 6-4, 6-1, 6-2, his first main-draw victory at Flushing Meadows. Monfils arrives from something far less orderly. He lost the opening set 6-2 against Adolfo Daniel Vallejo before winning the next three 6-1, 6-2, 6-0.

The Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line makes Tien a -476 favorite, with Monfils at +341. Tien is -6.5 games at -109, while Monfils +6.5 is -112. The total is 35 games, with the Over -112 and Under -110.

Pick: Learner Tien -6.5 (-109).

How Long Can Gael Monfils Keep Escaping?

Monfils’ first-round recovery matters more than the final score. He acknowledged afterward that his slow opening was partly about his movement, saying he needed to get his legs working better and felt too upright physically before loosening up. Once that happened, the match flipped completely.

That creates the central problem against Tien. The American does not need Monfils to play badly. He needs to keep making him play.

Tien’s game is unusually well equipped for that job. His left-handed patterns, rally tolerance and ability to redirect the ball can force Monfils through repeated changes of direction without giving him the easy pace he can turn into spectacular counterpunching. Spanish player Dani Mérida recently described Tien as physically relentless, highlighting his ability to keep putting another ball into the court.

Montreal Left One Dangerous Clue

The 6-0 set Monfils took from Tien in Montreal cannot simply be discarded because Tien eventually won.

Monfils still possesses enough first-strike power and improvisation to disrupt Tien when points stop following predictable patterns. His first-round performance in New York offered another reminder: after a poor opening set, he produced 37 winners and increasingly took control of the rallies.

Tien therefore cannot allow this to become a sequence of short emotional matches inside one five-set contest. He needs to keep Monfils returning, defending and changing direction rather than letting the Frenchman dictate with his first serve and forehand.

Tien’s broader hard-court numbers support that approach. Over his recent 52-match sample, he has held serve 80.4% of the time while breaking opponents in 25% of return games. Monfils’ corresponding figures are 75.9% and 16%.

Can Learner Tien Make Four Sets Expensive?

There is little mystery surrounding Tien’s confidence. He reached a career-high No. 12 this summer and recently described himself as pleased with his development while emphasizing that his focus remains on improving both weaknesses and strengths.

Monfils has something different behind him. Tuesday was his 40th birthday, his final US Open is underway, and the Armstrong crowd became increasingly involved as he overwhelmed Vallejo. He called the atmosphere “electric.”

That is the risk to the spread. One explosive Monfils set, exactly as Montreal demonstrated, can chew through a 6.5-game cushion quickly.

But best-of-five also gives Tien more time to impose the less glamorous part of this matchup. More returns. More lateral movement. More rallies Monfils has to finish rather than merely survive.

Tien does not need to silence Monfils completely. He needs to make every surge expensive enough that the 40-year-old cannot keep restarting it. Learner Tien -6.5 (-109) is the lean.
