Kyle Freeland Returns Into San Diego’s Surge

Kyle Freeland returns to a difficult lab to find out exactly how ready his neck is. The Rockies left-hander has not made a major-league start since August 19 after cervical radiculopathy sent him to the injured list. He completed a scoreless Double-A rehab appearance last week, but Tuesday brings Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, and a San Diego lineup that has scored at least five runs in its last six games.

Walker Buehler carries uncertainty of a different kind. His previous start lasted only 2⅓ innings after an accidental second mound visit forced his removal.

Bookmaker Sportsbook’s opening line makes San Diego -186 and Colorado +163, with Padres -1.5 at -123 and the total at 11.5. The pick is San Diego Padres -1.5 at -123.

Kyle Freeland Returns Without a Soft Landing

Freeland returns with a 4-10 record and a 6.37 ERA. The number that matters more on Tuesday is the interruption. A rehab appearance can establish health and pitch readiness, but it can’t fully recreate facing a major-league lineup at Coors Field after nearly four weeks without an MLB start.

San Diego has another complication waiting for him. Tatis and Machado supply right-handed power near the top of the order, while Ty France has returned from the paternity list. The Padres are creating pressure from several places rather than depending on one hitter to carry an inning.

Buehler’s Last Exit Solved Nothing

Buehler’s 4.61 ERA does not tell the full story of his second half. He has a 3.26 ERA across 10 starts since the All-Star break.

His latest appearance produced four strikeouts in 2⅓ innings before the mound-visit mistake ended it. That makes Tuesday unusual: Buehler arrives on normal rest but without the workload of a conventional previous start.

Coors still punishes loose command, and Colorado showed Monday that its lineup can continue creating traffic deep into a game.

The larger uncertainty is Hunter Goodman. Colorado’s 38-homer catcher left Monday with right-thumb soreness and was due for evaluation Tuesday. His absence would remove the Rockies’ leading home-run hitter from an already demanding matchup.

The MLB Playoffs Betting Guide offers additional context for September games where roster availability and bullpen workload increasingly shape the price.

Miller Makes the Ninth Less Comfortable

San Diego’s advantage is not unlimited. Mason Miller worked Monday for his 37th save after pitching twice in San Francisco over the weekend. Craig Stammen has already shown a willingness to distribute late innings when his highest-leverage relievers accumulate work.

That places more value on separation before the ninth. Kyle Freeland’s return, San Diego’s right-handed power, and the Padres’ recent ability to create runs throughout the lineup provide a stronger mechanism for producing it.

Prediction: San Diego Padres 7, Colorado Rockies 4.

Betting Analysis

The run line better prices the matchup. Freeland returns from an extended absence to Coors against a productive lineup, while Buehler’s brief prior appearance leaves him comparatively fresh.

Betting Lean

San Diego Padres -1.5 at -123.
