Kristoffer Velde Hurt LAFC In April. On Wednesday, He Took San Diego Apart.
Kristoffer Velde already has one goal and one assist against LAFC this season. On Wednesday night, he added another reminder of what happens when Portland gives him room to run: a goal and two assists in the Timbers’ 3-1 win over San Diego FC. Every Portland goal passed through him. His MLS total now stands at five goals and eight assists, tied with Kevin Kelsy for the team lead with 13 goal contributions.
LAFC arrive home from Colorado carrying something very different. Consecutive 1-0 MLS defeats, first against San Diego and then against the Rapids, have interrupted what remains one of the strongest defensive seasons in MLS. Marc Dos Santos described both decisive goals as soft.
LAFC has conceded twice in two league games and somehow made both goals feel self-inflicted. Saturday brings Velde back into the equation.
Kristoffer Velde Already Found The Gap Once
The previous meeting on April 11 ended 2-1 to Portland at Providence Park, LAFC’s first defeat of the season.
Velde broke LAFC’s record-setting season-opening shutout streak in the 32nd minute, carrying through the middle before driving a low finish inside the far post. Jude Terry equalized shortly after halftime, and the match appeared headed for a draw until the sixth minute of stoppage time.
Velde supplied the cross that eventually reached Kevin Kelsy for the winning header. The circumstances were unusual. Dos Santos had rotated heavily ahead of a Concacaf Champions Cup match, Son Heung-Min did not travel, and goalkeeper Thomas Hasal left injured after 30 minutes. Cabral Carter made his MLS debut from the bench.
Portland still exposed something relevant. When Velde receives with space to carry rather than with a defender already attached, he can attack centrally instead of remaining a conventional wide threat. LAFC’s full-backs and midfield screen have to decide whether to step toward him or protect the run beyond.

Cifuentes Got His First MLS Win. Velde Did Almost Everything.
Portland’s 3-1 victory over San Diego was Martí Cifuentes’ first MLS win as Timbers coach. Velde scored from distance in the first half, then assisted both second-half goals from Ariel Lassiter and David Da Costa. Portland have now won four of their last six MLS matches and six of their last nine across all competitions.
The improvement is not simply a scoring streak. Velde gives Portland a player who can carry an attack through different phases. He can receive wide and drive inside, attack space behind the full-back, or create after the first defensive line has already been moved.
Kelsy provides a different reference point. His nine league goals give center-backs a striker they cannot simply abandon to help elsewhere. Da Costa can arrive from deeper positions.
LAFC therefore cannot solve Velde by sending one extra defender toward him every time he touches the ball.
Two 1-0 Losses. Same Bruise
LAFC’s defensive numbers remain excellent. They lead MLS with 11 clean sheets, rank second in goals allowed per 90 minutes at 1.0, and have conceded the third-best goal differential in the league at plus-14. Opponents have not been generating waves of clear chances. Colorado managed only four shots on target Wednesday; San Diego had two in the previous league match.
The problem has been the price of individual mistakes. Against Colorado, Jeremy Ebobisse inadvertently deflected Youssef Maziz’s free kick into his own goal after 22 minutes. Carter later saved a penalty and another dangerous effort before halftime, but LAFC never found an equalizer despite Son and Denis Bouanga entering in the second half.
That matters against Portland because Cifuentes does not need his team to dominate possession at BMO Stadium. LAFC’s underlying defense has been good enough that Portland may not receive many invitations. April demonstrated what the Timbers can do with the last one.

What Happens When Son And Bouanga Come Back Fresh?
Dos Santos rotated aggressively in Colorado. Bouanga had started LAFC’s first eight matches after the World Cup and played 709 of a possible 720 minutes during that stretch. Son also started all eight. Both began Wednesday on the bench before entering after 64 minutes.
Saturday should therefore present Portland with a very different attacking problem. Son’s movement can pull a center-back away from the area Bouanga wants to attack. Bouanga can start wide and arrive centrally once the defensive line begins reacting to Son. Neither requires LAFC to build possession patiently for thirty seconds before threatening the goal.
Portland’s back line will have to defend both the space behind it and the ball in front of it. That becomes harder with the personnel available.
Portland Just Lost The Defender Velde Had Beside Him In April
Brandon Bye is out after suffering a serious leg injury against San Diego on Wednesday. Portland has confirmed he will miss the LAFC match, while Juan Mosquera is also unavailable with a foot/ankle injury. Alexander Aravena and Alex Bonetig are out as well.
Bye’s absence is directly linked to the first meeting. He was involved in Kelsy’s stoppage-time winner, heading Velde’s cross back across the six-yard box for the striker to finish.
Losing both Bye and Mosquera removes established options from the outside defensive positions against an LAFC attack built around movement into those channels.
LAFC have their own absences. Hasal, Igor Jesus, David Martínez and Sergi Palencia are all ruled out. Carter is therefore in line for another significant role after making his first MLS start in Colorado and saving Rafael Navarro’s penalty.
The goalkeeper who entered unexpectedly against Portland in April may now face them again from the opening whistle.

Can Portland Make LAFC Chase The Match Again?
The most useful feature of LAFC’s recent defeats is the scoreline. Both opponents scored first. Both then forced LAFC to solve a set defense.
Son and Bouanga are devastating when space appears behind an opponent. A team protecting a lead can remove some of that runway, defend closer to its own penalty area and force LAFC to find smaller passing windows.
Portland managed exactly that after Velde scored in April. Even after Terry equalized, the Timbers stayed close enough to the match for Kelsy to decide it in stoppage time.
The Soccer Betting Hub and Soccer Data Betting become useful here because LAFC’s two consecutive defeats should not automatically be read as evidence of defensive decline. Their chance prevention remains strong. The interesting change has occurred at the other end: two league matches without a goal have forced small defensive errors to carry the entire scoreline.
Does -158 Give Portland Enough Credit?
Bookmaker Sportsbook makes LAFC -158, Portland +347 and the draw +348. LAFC -1 is priced at -104, with Portland +1 at -123. The total sits at 3.5 goals, with the under favored at -136 and the over at +104.
The favorite case is easy to locate. LAFC are third in the Western Conference at 10-7-4, return home with Son and Bouanga rested, and have conceded very little all season. Portland are ninth at 8-9-3 and arrive without two important outside defenders.
Portland’s recent form makes -158 less automatic. The Timbers have won four of their last six MLS matches. Velde is coming off a three-contribution performance. They also already beat LAFC this season.
The total reflects LAFC’s defensive record more than Portland’s 3-1 result on Wednesday. LAFC’s last three MLS matches have produced only three total goals: a 1-1 draw with Vancouver followed by consecutive 1-0 defeats.
Betting Lean
Betting Lean: Under 3.5 goals (-136)
LAFC have allowed very little clean attacking volume, while their own attack has gone scoreless in consecutive league matches. Portland’s missing outside defenders make a heavy LAFC attacking performance possible, but four goals still requires the match to open considerably beyond LAFC’s recent league pattern.
Secondary Lean: Portland +1 (-123)
Portland have beaten LAFC once already and arrive with the more productive recent league form. The one-goal cushion also covers the exact margin of both LAFC defeats this week.
