Kenin Can Make Venus Williams Play Again
Venus Williams has spent 2026 insisting that the work has not changed. “I go hard and train harder,” she said before Wimbledon, explaining that she has reduced off-court running to protect her knees while continuing to spend extra time hitting.
Sunday asks whether that preparation can solve a more specific problem. Sofia Kenin does not need to overpower Williams. She can make her play another ball.
Williams enters their first tour-level meeting on a 14-match singles losing streak, while Kenin arrives after pushing world No. 11 Marta Kostyuk to 7-5 in the third set in Cincinnati.
Bookmaker Sportsbook opening lines for this match price Kenin -667, Williams +459, with Kenin giving 5.5 games at -106. The spread is what makes the match interesting.
One Cincinnati Number Is Difficult To Hide
Williams’ last singles match ended 6-2, 6-2 against Emiliana Arango. The score matters less than how Arango reached it.
Williams landed 58% of her first serves but won only 41% of those points. Arango broke four times and did not face sustained pressure on her own serve. Her stated plan was simple: move quickly and make Williams hit another ball.
Kenin brings a considerably more aggressive return game. Against Kostyuk in Cincinnati, she created 11 break-point opportunities and converted three. She also took the opening set before losing 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Sofia Kenin Has To Avoid The Spectacle
Arthur Ashe Stadium changes this match. Williams won the US Open in 2000 and 2001 and first reached the final here in 1997. She is not walking into an ordinary first round, and neither is Kenin. The crowd won’t need much encouragement.
Williams has also been putting in the work. Rennae Stubbs said this week that she had watched Williams practice for almost three hours and pushed back strongly against any suggestion that the 46-year-old is simply appearing for wild cards without preparing.
But preparation and recent match evidence are different things. Kenin beat Eva Lys from a set down in Cincinnati, then came within two games of eliminating Kostyuk. Williams’ latest singles opponent won all eight service games.

The Bookies Are Asking About The Margin
At -667, Kenin’s moneyline offers little. The -5.5 games at -106 asks the sharper question.
Williams has lost all 11 singles matches she has played this season and has not won a singles match since July 2025. Her latest defeat cleared this handicap comfortably.
Kenin’s recent results have been uneven enough to explain why she required a US Open wild card, but Cincinnati showed a level far closer to her former Top-10 tennis than her current ranking suggests.

Prediction: Sofia Kenin in straight sets
Betting lean: Sofia Kenin -5.5 games -106
Williams can still shorten points with the first strike. Kenin’s job is to keep returning it.
