Josh Allen Gets His Houston Texans Rematch

Josh Allen knows where the Houston Texans want this game decided. So do Dion Dawkins and Spencer Brown.

Houston’s Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter form one of the NFL’s most dangerous edge pairings. Buffalo arrives with both starting tackles healthy and a new Joe Brady offense whose first serious examination comes against precisely the pressure that can make everything behind the line irrelevant.

Can Buffalo protect Allen without shrinking the offense around him?

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line makes Buffalo -1.5 (-105) and Houston +1.5 (-111), with Over 44 at -108, Under 44 at -108, Buffalo -115 and Houston +102 on the moneyline.

Pick: Buffalo -1.5 (-105).

Dawkins Has Not Forgotten Houston

Dawkins has been unusually candid about Anderson and Hunter this week, acknowledging that losing individual battles against elite rushers sticks with an offensive tackle.

Brown called the Houston Texans’ edge pairing among the NFL’s best. The difference entering Sunday is physical: both Buffalo tackles are healthy. That gives Brady considerably more freedom with protection than an offense constantly compensating for compromised edges.

Houston still creates the harder question. Anderson and Hunter can generate pressure without requiring DeMeco Ryans to manufacture it with extra rushers. That leaves more defenders available to close Allen’s intermediate throwing windows or react when he escapes.

Houston Texans Have Not Seen Brady Yet

Ryans has described preparing for Buffalo’s redesigned staff as avoiding “chasing ghosts.” Brady is now the head coach, and Jim Leonhard has taken over Buffalo’s defense. Houston can study personnel and philosophical tendencies, but Week 1 leaves fewer reliable answers about how Buffalo will package them.

That uncertainty matters most around Josh Allen. Buffalo can answer aggressive edges with quicker throws, movement, and James Cook rather than asking its tackles to survive isolated dropbacks all afternoon. Khalil Shakir and the tight ends also give Allen middle-field options when Houston’s rush begins dictating his internal clock.

Houston’s defense remains capable of wrecking that calculation. The question is whether pressure arrives quickly enough to dictate Buffalo’s entire playbook rather than merely interrupt it.

Stroud Meets Leonhard Without Tape

The uncertainty works both ways. Leonhard said Buffalo deliberately kept its preseason defense simple because it didn’t want certain concepts on film. He will call Sunday’s game from the sideline, giving C.J. Stroud his first regular-season look at the finished version.

Houston has also rebuilt the circumstances around Stroud. Its offensive line enters with greater continuity after an offseason of change, while David Montgomery gives the Texans another route toward keeping Buffalo’s rush from treating every snap as a passing situation.

There is one confirmed offensive loss: wide receiver Jayden Higgins is out for the season with a torn ACL. Houston otherwise enters Sunday relatively healthy, while Buffalo lists Ty Johnson, T.J. Sanders and Jordan Hancock as questionable. Buffalo’s elevation of Frank Gore Jr. provides additional running-back depth if Johnson cannot play.

One Sack Could Change Four Quarters

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s 44-point total reflects how easily both defenses can alter possession value.

Houston’s front can create long-yardage downs without blitzing. Buffalo’s answer is a healthy offensive line protecting the league’s most dangerous improvisational quarterback. On the other side, Stroud faces a Buffalo defense whose pressure and coverage intentions have deliberately remained partly hidden.

That makes Buffalo’s small spread the better option. Josh Allen has more reliable answers when protection breaks down, and Buffalo’s healthy tackles reduce the chance that Houston’s front dictates the game from the opening series.

Prediction: Buffalo Bills 24, Houston Texans 20.

Betting Lean: Buffalo -1.5 (-105). The number asks Buffalo to win rather than dominate. With Dawkins and Brown healthy, Allen should have enough functional pockets to keep Houston’s greatest defensive advantage from becoming the entire game.
