John Mateer Brings Oklahoma’s Missing Offense South
Brent Venables was asked whether Oklahoma’s offense had found anything it could reliably hang its hat on through three games. “Not really.”
Saturday would be an inconvenient time to continue the search. John Mateer takes Oklahoma into Athens behind an offensive line still missing starting left tackle Michael Fasusi, with receivers Trell Harris and Jer’Michael Carter also out. Georgia, meanwhile, has scored 45 or more points in every game and allowed only 34 across three weeks.
The Sooners are getting 13.5 points because their defense can keep this interesting. Their offense gets to decide how long.
Fasusi Leaves John Mateer Less Room
Oklahoma has rushed for only 331 yards through three games, averaging 3.3 yards per attempt. Fasusi’s continued absence has pushed Ryan Fodje from guard to left tackle, while the Sooners have also rotated personnel at right guard.
That instability reaches directly into Mateer’s game. Georgia coach Kirby Smart has focused on Mateer’s ability to escape structure, describing a quarterback who can run inside, outside, and scramble to throw. Oklahoma has relied on that mobility before. Against Georgia, that becomes even more important when clean pockets aren’t guaranteed.
John Mateer has thrown six touchdowns but also three interceptions. Oklahoma has converted all six red-zone appearances into points, yet only two became touchdowns.

Stone Could Change Georgia’s Comfort
Oklahoma’s best argument lives on the other side of the ball. The Sooners are allowing 215.3 yards and 7.7 points per game, with opponents completing only half their passes and yet to throw a touchdown. Georgia tight end Lawson Luckie has already dismissed the idea that Oklahoma’s recent offensive problems say anything about its defense.
The uncertainty is David Stone. Oklahoma’s defensive tackle injured his knee during Monday’s walkthrough and remains questionable. Venables said the initial X-rays were encouraging, but Oklahoma has not converted that optimism into confirmed availability.
Stone’s presence matters against a Georgia offense that rushed for 254 yards at Arkansas.

Thirteen And A Half Needs Offense
Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton has completed 38 of 45 passes with nine touchdowns and no interceptions. His mobility adds another layer: Kirby Smart has described Stockton as a weapon when called passes become quarterback runs.
Georgia does carry backfield uncertainty. Nate Frazier remains questionable, while Dante Dowdell is out. Chauncey Bowens therefore provides established depth if Frazier’s workload is affected.
Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line: Georgia -13.5 at -108, with Oklahoma +13.5 at -109. Georgia is -516 on the moneyline, and Oklahoma is +415. The total is 44, with the over -107 and the under -109.
That total is the revealing part.
Oklahoma does not require Mateer to win a shootout to cover 13.5. It requires him to avoid creating the short fields that let Georgia’s offense escape the Sooners’ defensive strength.
With Fasusi and two receivers out, that is asking more of an offense Venables already considers unfinished.
Prediction: Georgia 24, Oklahoma 13.
Betting Lean: Oklahoma +13.5 (-109).
