Jesús Luzardo Can Shorten Philadelphia’s Problem
Philadelphia enters Monday five games behind Atlanta in the NL East, but the immediate problem is smaller than the standings. The Phillies need Jesús Luzardo to keep the afternoon away from the uncertain part of their roster.
Luzardo has a 3.02 ERA with 209 strikeouts and has become Philadelphia’s most reliable source of length during its second-half surge. Atlanta counters with Grant Holmes, who threw three perfect innings Wednesday before a weather delay ended his start.
Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line lists Philadelphia at -156, Atlanta at +138, and the total at eight runs. My pick is the Phillies moneyline (- 156), with Philadelphia winning 4-2.
Seven Innings Would Change Everything
Jesús Luzardo’s last start revealed exactly why Monday’s assignment matters. He worked 6 2/3 innings against Arizona and afterward specifically mentioned the value of giving Philadelphia length and saving the bullpen. Interim manager Don Mattingly also acknowledged the difficulty of leaving starters in for a third trip through the order.
That decision becomes more uncomfortable on Monday. Philadelphia used Jhoan Duran on both Saturday and Sunday. Rookie Alex McFarlane received a high-leverage eighth-inning assignment Sunday, while Jonathan Bowlan had worked Saturday and has shown diminished stuff when pitching on consecutive days.
The Phillies’ late innings are therefore less settled than Jesús Luzardo’s 13-5 record suggests.

Acuña Has Changed One Pitch
Ronald Acuña Jr. presents the clearest threat to Luzardo, keeping those decisions out of Mattingly’s hands.
Acuña has hit .500 over his last 34 at-bats and, more importantly for Monday, has gone 6-for-12 against four-seam fastballs during that stretch. He had been hitting just .119 against four-seamers before being rested on August 27.
That adjustment changes how Philadelphia should attack him. Jesús Luzardo’s evolving arsenal offers an answer. He has reduced his four-seam usage while leaning more heavily on his sinker and sweeper, with the sweeper increasingly appearing in favorable and two-strike counts.
Acuña can no longer be treated as the hitter who struggled against velocity through most of August. Luzardo does not need to test whether that weakness still exists.

Holmes Brings an Unusual Unknown
Holmes’ abbreviated Wednesday appearance creates a different uncertainty for Atlanta.
He retired all nine Washington hitters he faced before weather intervened. Rather than arriving after a conventional workload, he enters Citizens Bank Park after throwing only three innings.
Philadelphia has Bryce Harper carrying an extended on-base streak and Kyle Schwarber sitting on 42 home runs. Holmes therefore needs those extra days to translate into command, not just freshness.
If Philadelphia forces him into traffic early, Atlanta’s pitching depth becomes relevant before Luzardo’s does.
Prediction: Phillies 4, Braves 2.
The Bullpen Keeps -156 Honest
Philadelphia is -156, with Atlanta +138. The Phillies -1.5 is +129, while Atlanta +1.5 costs -148. Over eight is -111 and Under eight is -102.
Jesús Luzardo supplies the strongest starting-pitching edge, but Philadelphia’s unsettled late-inning hierarchy makes the run line unnecessarily ambitious.

Philadelphia Phillies moneyline -156.
