Jessica Pegula Keeps Moving Sabalenka’s Target

Jessica Pegula knows what happens if Aryna Sabalenka sees the same ball twice. So Thursday’s semifinal begins with a simple danger: Pegula has to change direction before Sabalenka can settle into one.

Pegula said after beating Emma Navarro that avoiding predictability will be central, particularly forcing Sabalenka to strike while moving rather than letting her plant and attack from familiar positions. The urgency is obvious. Sabalenka has beaten her nine times, including twice in New York. But Pegula also beat her in Berlin three months ago, winning the final six games.

Berlin Left Six Games Unanswered

Jessica Pegula’s 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-0 victory over Sabalenka in Berlin matters, but the surface limits what can be carried directly into New York.

Berlin was grass. The lower bounce and quicker first strike rewarded Pegula’s compact preparation differently from the hard courts at Arthur Ashe Stadium. What survives the surface change is narrower but still useful: Pegula showed she can prevent Sabalenka from settling when she redirects pace early and keeps changing the location of the next strike.

After losing the second-set tiebreak following a lengthy rain interruption, Pegula won every game in the decider. She later explained that she believed she had possessed the momentum before the delay and needed to rediscover it rather than reinvent the match.

Thursday asks whether the same principle survives on a slower, higher-bouncing court. Pegula cannot expect Berlin’s conditions to help rush Sabalenka through contact. She must create that discomfort herself by taking the ball early, changing direction, and forcing Sabalenka to strike before her feet are fully set.

Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line: Aryna Sabalenka -200, Jessica Pegula +160. Sabalenka is -3 games at -109, with Pegula +3 at -112. The total opened at 22.5 games, over -108 and under -114. My lean is Jessica Pegula +3 games at -112.

Navarro Exposed Jessica Pegula’s Slow Start

Jessica Pegula’s quarterfinal was useful for a less flattering reason. She lost the opening set 6-3 to Navarro while landing only 47% of her first serves and winning 35% behind the second. Three double faults arrived in one service game.

Pegula later admitted she had felt scattered, citing nerves, Navarro’s play and slower conditions as possible factors.

Sabalenka is unlikely to allow that kind of opening to remain temporary. She can step onto Pegula’s second delivery and immediately remove the American’s ability to disguise direction. If Pegula starts Thursday with the same serving uncertainty, the tactical puzzle may become irrelevant before she has enough neutral rallies to solve it.

Yet Pegula recovered against Navarro precisely by simplifying the match. She improved her level, stayed close through the second set and then produced the cleaner third.

Noskova Found Sabalenka’s Moving Edge

Linda Noskova supplied the opposite evidence. Sabalenka survived 7-6(1), 3-6, 7-6(7), but trailed 4-2 in the deciding set and acknowledged afterward that Noskova’s serving had put her under sustained pressure.

For a period, Sabalenka believed the match might already be gone. That feeling unexpectedly freed her. She began going after her shots again and recovered.

It was another reminder that defensive pressure alone is not enough against Sabalenka. Giving her extra balls without changing their location eventually allows her to reset her feet and attack.

Jessica Pegula’s challenge is more precise. She has to make Sabalenka hit one more ball from a different spot.

That is also why the +3 appeals more than the +160 moneyline.

Sabalenka remains the deserved favorite. She leads their rivalry 9-4, owns an 18-match US Open winning streak and has reached the final in each of the past three years. She has repeatedly shown that one explosive return game can break otherwise even sets.

But Pegula’s current evidence is difficult to dismiss. She has reached five finals this season, owns a 2026 victory over Sabalenka and has now reached the US Open semifinals for a third consecutive year.

The principal risk is the first half-hour. If Sabalenka pins Pegula behind the baseline before the American establishes her directional variation, three games can disappear quickly.

If Pegula gets Sabalenka moving first, however, the match becomes much harder to price as a routine favorite’s spread.

Sabalenka wants a target. Pegula’s task is to keep moving it.

Betting lean: Jessica Pegula +3 games at -112.
