Jessica Pegula Has the 5-4 Lead. Will Coco Gauff Have the Last Word?
Jessica Pegula had to remove the defending champion to reach Sunday’s Cincinnati Open final. She spent nearly three hours doing it.
Pegula recovered from a breakdown in the deciding set to beat Iga Swiatek 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, ending Swiatek’s 10-match winning streak and collecting the 300th tour-level victory of her career. Coco Gauff followed by beating Sara Bejlek 6-4, 6-1.
The result is Cincinnati’s first all-American women’s final in 56 years. Pegula enters as World No. 3, Gauff as No. 4. Six weeks ago, Pegula won the first set against Gauff. She still lost the match.
Wimbledon Changed After 58 Points
Their July quarterfinal at Wimbledon began with Pegula doing precisely what has worked against Gauff before. She took the ball early, attacked the second serve, and repeatedly prevented Gauff from settling into comfortable forehand exchanges. Pegula won the opening set 6-4.
Gauff then changed the match. She won 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, raising her first-serve effectiveness and reducing the errors that had given Pegula control. Across the match, Gauff won 67.2% of first-serve points to Pegula’s 57.1% and converted all five break opportunities.
Hard court changes the geometry. Pegula’s compact strokes take time away more effectively on this surface, while Gauff gets greater value from her movement and heavy forehand when she can push exchanges beyond the first few shots.

Swiatek Made Jessica Pegula Win the Same Match Twice
Pegula’s semifinal was anything but orderly. She took the opening set 7-5, lost the second 6-4, and then fell a break behind in the decider. Swiatek had arrived on a 10-match winning streak after taking the Toronto title and was attempting to defend Cincinnati. Pegula recovered the break and closed the match 6-4 in the third.
That followed another three-set examination against Amanda Anisimova in the quarterfinal, which Pegula won 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(4).
The accumulation is worth watching on Sunday. Gauff’s defensive coverage can turn a point that appears finished into another three or four changes of direction. Pegula has already spent consecutive rounds being asked to solve matches deep into deciding sets.
Bejlek Got Four Games. Then One.
Bejlek arrived in the semifinal after eliminating World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and Madison Keys during her Cincinnati run. Coco Gauff gave her considerably less room.
The American won 6-4, 6-1, reaching the final in 76 minutes. The opening set required adjustment against a left-hander she had never faced; the second disappeared quickly.
Gauff had already beaten Marta Kostyuk 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinal. She therefore reaches Sunday without having played a deciding set in either of her last two matches.
Her serve has also become less intrusive in the story. Before the semifinal, Gauff said she had become more decisive with it and more confident attacking after being broken.

Five Wins Against Four Is Almost No Separation at All
Pegula’s 5-4 head-to-head lead makes this one of the more balanced rivalries among the leading American women. The matchup repeatedly returns to the same pressure point.
Pegula wants to receive close enough to the baseline to attack Gauff’s second serve and redirect pace before Gauff can establish her defensive range. Gauff wants another ball. Once the exchange stretches, her movement creates increasingly difficult finishing positions and gives her forehand time to push Pegula away from the baseline.
Their Wimbledon match supplied both versions. The Tennis Betting Hub provides the useful broader context for a final where a 5-4 head-to-head offers little separation. The WTA Betting Guide becomes more relevant when the immediate workload, surface and specific rally patterns provide more information than the raw rivalry score.
Coco Gauff vs Jessica Pegula Betting Analysis
Bookmaker Sportsbook lists Gauff at -141, with Pegula at +115. Gauff gives 1.5 games at -109, while Pegula receives +1.5 at -112. The total is 22 games, with the over at -110 and the under at -111.
The price makes Gauff a favorite, but hardly an overwhelming one. Pegula has just beaten Swiatek and owns the narrow career head-to-head advantage. Gauff brings the more economical route through the final two rounds and won their latest meeting.
The total also sits below the 27 games they played at Wimbledon.

One Number Has Survived Nine Meetings
Five matches belong to Pegula. Four belong to Gauff.
Sunday does not require either player to discover an unfamiliar opponent. Pegula knows where the Gauff second serve can be attacked. Gauff knows how much additional pressure appears once she extends the rally beyond Pegula’s preferred first-strike patterns.
The physical contrast after Saturday is harder to ignore. Pegula’s semifinal lasted almost three hours; Gauff’s lasted 76 minutes.
