Jayden Maiava Puts Louisiana’s Patience on Trial
Louisiana can make Saturday uncomfortable by keeping the ball away from Jayden Maiava. USC has spent two games making that plan difficult before halftime.
The Trojans have outscored their opponents 58-0 in the first half, while Maiava has completed 48 of 54 passes for 635 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. Louisiana arrives with a quarterback who can help compress the game: Lunch Winfield rushed for 84 yards while completing 16 of 22 passes in his first start.
That creates the central question: can Louisiana sustain enough possession to prevent Jayden Maiava from turning a 31-point spread into a chase before its offense has settled?
Bookmaker Sportsbook’s opening line makes USC -31 (-104) and Louisiana +31 (-112), with Over 59 at -108 and Under 59 at -108. Pick: Louisiana +31 (-112).
Desormeaux Wants One Dimension Left
Michael Desormeaux has already identified the first layer of Louisiana’s defensive plan: reduce USC’s running game and force the burden toward Jayden Maiava. He acknowledged the obvious catch: an offense this explosive can simply punish that choice through the air.
USC’s balance makes the idea more interesting than the cliché suggests. Waymond Jordan and King Miller have combined for 223 rushing yards, while six Trojans have between five and 11 receptions. Freshman Trent Mosley leads USC with 222 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
So Louisiana cannot devote extra bodies to Maiava’s receivers without creating easier numbers for the run. The Cajuns’ route to covering instead begins with Winfield and a ground game that produced 243 yards in its opener. Longer possessions reduce the number of times USC gets to ask that defensive question.

Stewart Could Shorten Winfield’s Clock
USC’s defensive front may gain another piece Saturday. Lincoln Riley said this week that defensive tackle Jahkeem Stewart had returned to practice and had “a shot” to play after missing the first two games with a foot injury. His availability had not been confirmed at the time of publication.
That matters because Winfield’s mobility is not decorative. His 84 rushing yards against Lamar matched Louisiana’s team high, and his legs give the Cajuns a way to escape obvious passing situations.
USC has already shown how quickly front pressure can change the picture behind it. Safety Prophet Brown said pressure has helped the secondary by forcing quarterbacks to release the ball quickly. Against a mobile quarterback, however, losing rush-lane integrity can turn pressure into an escape route.

Two Interceptions Complicate the Upset Script
Winfield’s opener also contained the number that makes +31 uncomfortable: two interceptions.
Louisiana scored on four of its first six possessions against Lamar and benefited from four takeaways. Desormeaux praised the complementary relationship between his offense and defense afterward. Against USC, turnovers carry a different price because Maiava has yet to throw an interception and USC has scored 40.5 points per game.

Louisiana does not require an upset script to cover. It requires enough first downs, quarterback runs and possession time to keep USC from accumulating the drives normally associated with a 31-point margin.
Prediction: USC 42, Louisiana 17.
Betting Lean: Louisiana +31 (-112). USC owns the overwhelming talent and quarterback advantages, but Louisiana’s run-heavy structure and Winfield’s mobility offer a credible mechanism for shortening the game. The danger is obvious: turnovers could hand Maiava the short fields that destroy that mechanism.
