Jacob DeGrom Gets Three Days to Matter

Jacob deGrom gets the baseball with Texas almost out of the calendar. The Rangers arrive in Minnesota 79-80 and a half-game behind Houston in the AL West. Their remaining margin is three games. DeGrom, meanwhile, brings a 3.86 ERA and 196 strikeouts into a matchup with Joe Ryan, whose 3.83 ERA makes Friday far less comfortable than the names suggest.

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line makes Texas -106 and Minnesota -106, with Over 7.5 -111, Under 7.5 -102, Texas -1.5 (+163) and Minnesota +1.5 (-188).

Ryan Has Removed the Easy Innings

Ryan is not offering Texas an obvious opening. The right-hander has struck out 151 batters while allowing only 30 walks in 138⅔ innings, posting a 1.18 WHIP. His latest start against the Angels lasted five innings and yielded two runs.

That matters against a Rangers club whose postseason route has narrowed dramatically. Texas spent much of the final week protecting an AL West lead; it reaches Minnesota chasing Houston instead.

Jacob DeGrom’s Margin Has Changed Completely

Texas no longer has Cal Quantrill available behind this final push. Quantrill’s right lat strain ended his regular season, removing the Rangers’ 2.86 ERA leader from an already improvised rotation.

Jacob DeGrom therefore carries something different Friday: not merely the opposing lineup, but the innings Texas would rather not purchase from an overworked pitching staff.

His season line is 11-10 with a 3.86 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 196 strikeouts across 158⅔ innings. Ryan’s numbers are remarkably close, but deGrom has allowed fewer baserunners and brings the stronger strikeout total.

Minnesota Lost Its Most Dangerous Shortcut

The Twins’ lineup enters the series without Byron Buxton, who is listed on the injured list with a hip issue. Minnesota is also without Trevor Larnach and Joc Pederson.

That doesn’t make Ryan any easier to beat. It changes what one mistake from Jacob deGrom can become.

With the starters separated by three hundredths of ERA and the market essentially refusing to choose between them, I prefer the pitcher with the lower WHIP against the lineup missing its most explosive bat.

Three games remain. Texas has finally reached the part of September where deGrom doesn’t have to save a season by himself. He only gets to start trying.

Pick: Texas -106.
