Jack Perkins Makes Cleveland Cost A Fortune
Jack Perkins has accomplished something remarkable before throwing a pitch Sunday: he has made Cleveland cost -251.
That is what happens when a 3-11 pitcher with a 6.14 ERA walks into Progressive Field opposite Gavin Williams. Perkins has allowed 75 earned runs in 110 innings. Williams owns a 3.78 ERA with 235 strikeouts in 174 innings. One starter looks like October preparation. The other looks like the reason bookmakers invented enormous minus signs.
Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line: Guardians -251, Athletics +217; Guardians -1.5 (-106), Athletics +1.5 (-106); Over 7.5 (+106), Under 7.5 (-120). Pick: Guardians -1.5 (-106).
Jack Perkins Has Nowhere Left To Hide
There is no clever statistical excavation required here. Perkins has a 6.14 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, and 127 strikeouts across 110 innings. Opponents are hitting .264 against him. The Athletics have won just once in his 10 starts as a moneyline underdog.
Ordinarily, -251 would send me running toward the underdog with a sandwich and emergency provisions. Not this time.
Cleveland gets Jack Perkins immediately after the Athletics bullpen was forced to cover more than five innings Saturday when Jacob Lopez was knocked out in the third. That is not an ideal inheritance for a starter carrying an ERA north of six.

Cleveland Deliberately Saved Williams For This
Here is the part that makes the mismatch nastier. Cleveland rearranged Williams’ schedule last week, pushing him back so he could face Chicago on Monday and still pitch Sunday against the Athletics. This is not some accidental rotation turn. The Guardians deliberately positioned their highest-strikeout starter for two late-season assignments while fighting for the AL Central.
Williams enters with a .213 opponent batting average and those 235 strikeouts. Cleveland also begins Sunday atop the division.
Meanwhile, the Athletics have scored six runs in their first two games in Cleveland. Against Williams, that suddenly looks ambitious.

Saturday Sent Cleveland Home Early
The bullpen argument makes this worse for the Athletics. Cleveland didn’t need its leverage relievers to protect a one-run lead Saturday. The Guardians’ offense scored 12, with Angel Martínez homering from both sides of the plate and Chase DeLauter adding a three-run homer.
That matters Sunday because Cleveland already owns the substantially stronger bullpen profile: a 3.14 ERA and 1.19 WHIP, compared with 4.96 and 1.45 for the Athletics.
Jack Perkins therefore faces an unpleasant choice. Pitch deep against the AL Central leader, or introduce Cleveland to the tired end of an inferior bullpen. Lovely.
Minus 251 Is Financial Vandalism
I like Cleveland. I am not paying -251 for Cleveland. That price demands $251 to win $100 because Williams is excellent, Perkins has been battered, Cleveland has the bullpen advantage, and the Athletics spent Saturday giving up innings to them. Fine.
Bookmaker Sportsbook also offers Guardians -1.5 at -106.
There is the wager.
Prediction: Guardians 5, Athletics 2.
Betting lean: Guardians -1.5 (-106).
If Cleveland cannot beat Jack Perkins by two runs, I would rather lose $106 discovering that than pay $251 for the privilege of being surprised.
