Iva Jovic Attacks Coco Gauff’s New Foundation

Iva Jovic has already found a way to create chances against Coco Gauff. In Rome this spring, she pushed Gauff deep into a third set before losing 7-5, 5-7, 6-2. The unresolved problem on Monday is different: the shot Jovic once expected to pressure is no longer behaving the same way.

Gauff has rebuilt her serve. Her toss is more consistent, the wrist position has changed, and most importantly, she now approaches second serves expecting them to produce an advantage rather than merely survive. Jovic therefore needs to discover whether sustained return pressure can still reopen the uncertainty Gauff spent the last year removing.

Bookmaker Sportsbook prices Gauff at -286 and Jovic at +223. Gauff is -4 games at -108, with Jovic +4 at -114. Pick: Coco Gauff -4 (-108).

Iva Jovic Finally Gets Coco Gauff’s New Serve

Gauff’s technical work matters because Jovic’s clearest route into this match begins on return.

Against Alexandra Eala, Jovic played a match with 17 service breaks. She produced 44 winners, kept attacking through more than three hours, and recovered from 4-2 down in the deciding set. That ability to turn vulnerable service games into immediate scoreboard pressure is exactly what could make Gauff uncomfortable.

But Gauff’s serve is becoming harder to attack routinely. She has identified a more consistent toss and less wrist curl as two elements of the rebuild, and entered New York saying she now serves thinking about aces rather than simply hoping the ball lands in.

Coco Gauff Can Make Three Hours Matter

Jovic’s third-round victory demonstrated remarkable resilience. It also demanded almost everything she had.

After beating Eina, Jovic described losing her earrings, falling on the court, cutting her knees, and enduring repeated emotional swings. She nevertheless said she intends to bring the same fight and energy against Gauff.

Gauff offers a particularly unpleasant opponent immediately afterward because she can make Jovic hit extra balls without surrendering court position. Against Cristina Bucsa, Gauff acknowledged that defense carried much of her opening set before she found enough rhythm to swing more freely. She still won in straight sets and has not dropped a set in New York.

If Jovic cannot consistently finish through Gauff’s defense, Saturday’s three-hour workload becomes more relevant with every additional exchange.

The WTA Betting Guide provides useful context for game spreads where physical resistance can matter as much as the outright winner.

Rome’s Chances Come With Interest

Jovic has no reason to treat Coco Gauff as untouchable. She called their Rome meeting a “heartbreaker” because of the opportunities she had and said reproducing Saturday’s level would give her chances again. That confidence is supported by her ball-striking against Eala rather than merely by an old result.

But Gauff now presents a less forgiving version of the same matchup. Her first-serve percentage against Bucsa was only around 50%, so the rebuilt delivery is not yet beyond disruption. Jovic should see enough second serves to test it. The question is what happens if those attacks do not immediately produce breaks.

Coco Gauff can defend better than Eala, extend Jovic’s attacking sequences and force the teenager to generate another high-output performance less than 48 hours after her marathon. She also arrives on a nine-match winning streak stretching through her Cincinnati title run.

Four games leave relatively little room for a dominant Gauff set, but Jovic’s level makes a blowout assumption dangerous. The stronger case is that Gauff’s improved serve removes enough return opportunities while her defense gradually raises the cost of Jovic’s aggression.

Coco Gauff -4 games (-108) is the betting lean.
