Is Marlon Vera Really Finished Yet?

Four straight losses have turned Marlon Vera into a +169 underdog against Charles Jourdain. The uncomfortable part is that Vera agrees that something has been wrong.

Watching his recent fights, he sometimes catches himself thinking: “Fuck, throw.” Vera has changed camps, reunited with old coaches, and says he has deliberately restored more kickboxing instead of relying on “heavy pressure with big hands.”

Saturday’s UFC 331 is not merely another comeback attempt. It tests whether the market has buried Chito before his changes get a chance to speak.

Jourdain Thinks Old Chito Returns

Jourdain has heard about the reinvention. He is not entirely buying it. After three straight bantamweight wins, the Canadian believes Vera may show new ideas early, then eventually return to familiar habits. His response is unusually aggressive: concentrate on his own weapons and force Vera to adapt.

That confidence has evidence behind it. Jourdain says he carried too much muscle into the Kyler Phillips fight and that it hurt him during grappling exchanges. He enters camp leaner and believes he’s finally found his bantamweight “sweet spot.”

Marlon Vera Finally Said the Quiet Part

Vera’s problem has not been durability. It has been minutes disappearing. Against David Martinez in February, Vera landed only five significant strikes in Round 1 before rising to 13 in the second and 24 in the third. He lost the decision. UFC Stats now has him absorbing 5.34 significant strikes per minute while landing 4.18.

The controversy is obvious: how many times can a fighter acknowledge slow output before bookmakers are right to stop pricing the comeback? Vera says his body is healthy. He also accepts responsibility rather than blaming his former team. Saturday, in his words, is the “ultimate test.”

Minus 199 Assumes the Fix Fails

Jourdain is 3-0 since dropping to bantamweight. Vera has lost four straight. That explains the price. It does not automatically justify it.

Jourdain himself refuses to treat Vera as a fading former contender and believes some of those decisions were razor-thin. More importantly, he expects a dangerous fighter capable of changing approaches.

If Vera actually restores his kicking volume earlier, Jourdain may have to beat something the recent tape has barely shown. At +169, finding out is worth the argument.

Prediction: Marlon Vera by decision.
