The surface numbers favor New York. The recent evidence underneath Kumar Rocker is more interesting. Schumaker specifically rejected fatigue as the explanation for an earlier poor outing, saying Rocker’s velocity and slider shape remained intact while his location deteriorated. Then came those four innings Schumaker considered Rocker’s best in months.

Texas Has Run Out of Spare Innings

Kumar Rocker’s command carries extra weight because the Rangers no longer have a conventional September pitching structure behind him.

Texas’ bullpen has thrown more innings than its rotation this month. On Wednesday, Tyler Alexander worked 1⅔ innings, Jacob Latz 1⅔innings, Jordan Montgomery two-thirds innings, with Trevor Williams and Chase Silseth also appearing.

Cal Quantrill is already on the injured list with a right lat strain. Texas also optioned Winston Santos and recalled right-hander Gavin Collyer before Thursday’s finale.

Thornton Makes Patience More Expensive

Thornton presents the opposite problem. Through 14 major-league starts, the rookie owns a 3.40 ERA across 79⅓ innings. He doesn’t bring Rocker’s strikeout total, but his 1.15 WHIP has given New York far fewer innings that need rescuing.

That leaves Texas paying -133 behind the pitcher with the inferior season numbers.

I’m taking it because Kumar Rocker’s recent pitch quality offers the more interesting signal, and Schumaker has identified exactly where Thursday can turn: strike one determines whether Rocker gets to use that stuff from ahead or spends another afternoon negotiating traffic.

And Texas cannot afford many negotiations.
