Hunter Brown Gets A Left-Handed Examination
Pick: Houston Astros -125
Secondary lean: Under 7.5 (+104)
Houston opens a three-game series at Citi Field at 67-67 after taking two of three from the Yankees. The Mets are 60-74 after losing two straight to Milwaukee by a combined 16-3. Hunter Brown faces Christian Scott, with Bookmaker Sportsbook pricing Houston at -125, New York +111 and the total at 7.5.
The Astros need this game for an obvious reason: they entered Friday first in the AL West despite sitting at .500. Yordan Alvarez’s approach to the New York trip was appropriately unsentimental: treat the Yankees and Mets like “just another series.”
Brown’s assignment makes that harder than the standings suggest.
How Many Lefties Can Hunter Brown Navigate?
Brown brings a 3.51 ERA and 76 strikeouts into his 15th start. His season platoon split, however, gives the Mets something tangible to attack: right-handed hitters have managed a .584 OPS against him, compared with .755 for left-handed hitters. Over his last 28 days, opponents overall have produced a .769 OPS.
New York can build accordingly. Friday’s official lineup had not been posted when checked, but the available pool includes left-handed Carson Benge, Jared Young, A.J. Ewing and Brett Baty, with switch-hitting Francisco Lindor.
For a team 14 games under .500, the Mets have accidentally assembled a fairly specific Brown problem.
Juan Soto remains out with a calf strain, although he has resumed live batting practice and baserunning. Bo Bichette is dealing with a left ankle contusion and is not expected to miss significant time. Their availability removes some certainty from New York’s lineup construction.

Christian Scott Cannot Give Houston Free Traffic
Scott’s 3.73 ERA looks almost identical to Brown’s, but his previous start showed how quickly his margin can disappear. He allowed four runs on five hits over 4⅔ innings against the White Sox despite striking out six.
Houston just handled Gerrit Cole without needing Yordan Alvarez to carry the offense. Christian Walker went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer Thursday, while Jeremy Peña also homered in the 5-1 win. Peña had X-rays on his left hand afterward, which were negative.
Scott’s job is therefore less about matching Hunter Brown strikeout for strikeout than preventing Houston from turning ordinary baserunners into innings that force him out before the middle game is settled.
Readers following the MLB Betting Hub and MLB Playoffs Betting Guide have a useful late-August oddity here: Houston is playing postseason baseball at .500, while New York can attack a genuine matchup weakness without having much postseason relevance left.
Betting Lean
The Mets’ left-handed options make -125 less comfortable than the standings imply, but Houston has the deeper offensive route if Brown survives that pocket of the lineup.
The total is more tempting. Brown and Scott can both miss bats, Citi Field does not demand offensive aggression from the number, and Under 7.5 at +104 gives us plus money rather than paying heavily for the obvious pitching angle.
Betting Lean: Houston Astros -125
Secondary Lean: Under 7.5 (+104)
Prediction: Astros 4, Mets 3
