How Long Can Flavio Cobolli Keep Searching?

Flavio Cobolli arrives in New York with unusual tension attached to his recent hard-court success: he has been winning matches without immediately finding his best tennis.

The opening line at Bookmaker Sportsbook has Flavio Cobolli at -455 and Francisco Comesaña at +339, with Cobolli -6 games at -101 and the total set at 36.5.

The moneyline leaves little room for value. The handicap is more interesting.

Three Sets Became Flavio Cobolli’s Habit

Cobolli reached the Cincinnati semifinals after three consecutive three-set victories.

Against Rafael Jodar, he needed time to find his range after producing 42 unforced errors across the opening two sets. Cobolli’s own description was revealing: “I just [told] myself to believe, to fight in every point, and I knew I would get a chance.”

Monday asks how much searching Comesaña allows him. Cobolli is the stronger hard-court player and arrives at a career-high No. 10. His ability to defend, extend rallies, and turn neutral exchanges into forehand opportunities gives him several routes through difficult periods.

The -6 handicap asks a different question from the -455 moneyline. It asks how quickly those advantages appear.

Comesaña Gets One Useful Place to Push

Comesaña cannot afford to make this a test of who owns more solutions across five sets. His opportunity sits earlier.

Cobolli’s Cincinnati run showed how effectively he can repair matches once rallies lengthen and his timing settles. Comesaña therefore has reason to attack the opening stages, protect his own service games and force Cobolli to play from behind before the favorite establishes his preferred rhythm.

Relevant evidence exists between them, but only a little is needed. Their sole previous meeting came on Monte Carlo clay in April, where Comesaña took the opening set before Cobolli recovered to win in three. Monday moves them onto outdoor hard courts, reducing the value of treating that result as a template.

New York Has Already Seen Flavio Cobolli

Cobolli has not spent the entire build-up waiting for Monday.

He reached the US Open mixed doubles final with Belinda Bencic during Fan Week and played additional exhibition tennis at Arthur Ashe Stadium. His quick hands and willingness to move forward were prominent during that run, giving him competitive exposure to the New York environment before his singles campaign begins.

The ATP Betting Guide case therefore separates winner from margin. Cobolli owns more ways to solve the matchup, but -6 requires him to solve it without surrendering too much scoreboard territory while he does.

At -120, Comesaña +6 provides slightly more protection against precisely that possibility.
