Has Brunno Ferreira Learned the Wrong Lesson?
Brunno Ferreira says he has found the mentality that made him dangerous again. The uncomfortable possibility is that it makes Edmen Shahbazyan more dangerous too.
After consecutive losses in 2026, Ferreira says he is treating UFC 331 as though his career has returned to Dana White’s Contender Series. His intention is unmistakably aggressive: “vamos sair na mão,” he told Ag Fight, framing Saturday as a return to the all-in mentality that launched him into the UFC.
Against many middleweights, that sounds ominous. Against Shahbazyan, it may sound suspiciously like consent.
Bookmaker Sportsbook’s opening line makes Brunno Ferreira +151 and Edmen Shahbazyan -175, with Over 1.5 rounds -145 and Under 1.5 +125.
Four Inches Complicate Brunno Ferreira’s Revival
Ferreira is 5-foot-10 with a 72-inch reach. Shahbazyan is 6-foot-2 with a 74-inch reach. More importantly, Shahbazyan lands 4.06 significant strikes per minute, compared with Ferreira’s 3.27.
Those numbers do not make Shahbazyan safe. Nothing involving Ferreira is especially safe. Fourteen of his 15 victories have ended inside the distance, including nine knockouts and five submissions. Eleven came in Round 1.
But aggressive exchanges shorten the distance Ferreira has to cross while simultaneously increasing the number of clean entries Shahbazyan can read. The Brazilian’s power makes that bargain dangerous for both men.

Shahbazyan Has His Own Old Ghost
Here is why -175 is uncomfortable: Shahbazyan’s career already contains evidence of what happens when an opponent turns his preferred striking fight into sustained physical pressure.
His defensive numbers remain ordinary rather than dominant: 50% significant-strike defense and 67% takedown defense. Ferreira averages one takedown and 0.60 submission attempts per 15 minutes, while Shahbazyan averages 1.43 takedowns himself.
Ferreira therefore has more than a puncher’s chance if aggression produces clinches and transitions instead of a clean kickboxing match.

“Contender Series” Might Be the Trap
This is where Ferreira’s quote becomes more than fight-week theater. He has lost twice in 2026: Gregory Rodrigues knocked him out in the first round, and Ikram Aliskerov beat him by unanimous decision after landing 114 significant strikes and completing five takedowns. Ferreira’s answer is not caution. It is a psychological return to the version who fought as though somebody had hidden the brake pedal.
That may restore the initiative missing against Aliskerov. It may also give Shahbazyan exactly the tempo at which his length, straight punches and first-round finishing history become most threatening. Shahbazyan owns 13 knockouts among 16 victories and 13 first-round finishes.
Prediction: Edmen Shahbazyan by first-round TKO.
Ferreira’s renewed aggression is real enough to make the upset dangerous. The controversy is whether it represents an adjustment at all.
Betting Lean: Edmen Shahbazyan -175. Ferreira is promising to rediscover his identity. This matchup may punish him for finding it.
