Griezmann Walks Into Minnesota United’s New Shape

Minnesota United finally found a formation worth keeping. Antoine Griezmann arrives almost immediately to test whether it really works.

The Loons’ 5-2-1-2 produced a season-best 5-1 win at San Jose, freeing Joaquín Pereyra as the lone creator while Kelvin Yeboah and Marcus Caldeira occupied different forward lanes. Minnesota enters Saturday 7-7-7, with only one loss in its last five games across all competitions.

Orlando is 7-11-3, but that record increasingly describes an earlier version of the team. Since Griezmann’s MLS debut, the Lions are 3-2-1. He has three goals and two assists across those six league starts, while Orlando ranks fourth in MLS with 13.45 expected goals since the World Cup break.

Bookmaker Sportsbook makes Minnesota -125, Orlando +310 and the draw +315. Under 3.5 is -125.

Pereyra’s Freedom Comes With A Guest Named Griezmann

Minnesota’s new shape worked because Pereyra could operate ahead of a double pivot without sharing his creative territory. Against San Jose, Kyle Duncan supplied width from wingback while Yeboah drifted around Caldeira rather than remaining fixed as a conventional No. 9.

Griezmann complicates that geometry. Fourteen of his 21 MLS shots for Orlando have come from inside the penalty area, but he does not simply wait there. His value comes from dropping away from center backs, connecting possession, and arriving again once defenders have been pulled elsewhere.

Orlando Finally Had Time To Breathe

The Lions had played three consecutive midweek matches during August before receiving a full training week ahead of Minnesota.

Interim coach Martín Perelman said the priority was restoring “balance” after the compressed schedule rather than simply adding more physical work. Defender Zakaria Taifi was even less diplomatic about the relief: Orlando finally had a week instead of “game, recover, game, recover.”

That matters for a team whose recent improvement has been built partly on attacking intensity. Orlando’s 2.24 expected goals per match since MLS resumed ranks third in the league.

There is one important uncertainty. Martín Ojeda, one of Orlando’s principal creators, is officially questionable with a thigh injury. Braian Ojeda and Bernardo Rhein are out, while Adrián Marín is also questionable. Minnesota will be without Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Peter Stroud.

Joaquín Pereyra turns into central space with Kelvin Yeboah making a run ahead during a previous MLS match.

Yeboah Has Started Scoring Again

Minnesota United’s answer is not complicated. Yeboah ended an eight-game scoring drought with two goals against San Jose, taking him to 10 for the season. More importantly, the 5-2-1-2 gave him room to move away from Caldeira instead of asking both forwards to occupy the same spaces.

Orlando’s defensive numbers have improved sharply, allowing only 7.9 expected goals since the break, seventh-best in MLS over that span.

So Saturday is not simply Minnesota’s revived attack against Orlando’s revived attack. It is a test of which structural improvement survives contact with the other.

Prediction

Minnesota’s new shape deserves respect after San Jose, but Orlando’s post-break numbers are too strong to treat the Lions as an ordinary +310 road underdog.

Griezmann’s movement should create enough problems between Minnesota’s midfield and back five to prevent the Loons from controlling this as comfortably as the price implies.

Prediction: Minnesota United 1-1 Orlando City.

Betting Analysis

Bookmaker Sportsbook prices Orlando +0.5 at +106.

Minnesota has only a 2-5-3 home league record, while Orlando’s underlying numbers since the break have moved sharply upward. Minnesota may still be the likelier individual winner, but the handicap gives Orlando two useful outcomes.
