Golden Knights vs Ducks Game 5 Odds Analysis: Anaheim’s Speed Has Reopened a Series Vegas Thought It Controlled

Four games into this series, the emotional momentum has changed hands almost every night, but the underlying tension has stayed the same. Vegas still believe they are the deeper, more complete playoff team. Anaheim still believe their speed and pressure can keep dragging this matchup away from Vegas’ preferred structure. After the Ducks’ 4-3 Game 4 win tied the series 2-2, Game 5 suddenly feels far heavier than a typical swing game. The winner now moves within one victory of the Western Conference Final, and the betting board reflects how narrow the margin has become.

Vegas enter Game 5 at home as -141 favourites at Bookmaker Sportsbook, with Anaheim returning at +125 and the total sitting at 6.5. That line says the oddsmakers still trust the Golden Knights’ experience, home ice, and overall roster depth to stabilise the series. But through four games, Anaheim have repeatedly shown they can disrupt Vegas once the pace starts climbing.

Game 1 set the emotional tone immediately. Vegas escaped with a 3-1 win, but the game carried frustration and controversy after Ivan Barbashev’s late goal came following a waived-off icing sequence that left Anaheim furious. Carter Hart stopped 33 shots, Mitch Marner added a goal and an assist, and the Golden Knights looked like the calmer team late in the game. Anaheim competed hard enough, but Vegas controlled the emotional pressure better once the third period tightened.

Game 2 shifted completely. Anaheim responded with far more aggressive transition pressure and cleaner zone entries, forcing Vegas into longer defensive sequences than they wanted. Lukas Dostal settled into the series, the Ducks’ younger legs started changing the speed of play, and suddenly Vegas were defending far more often off the rush instead of controlling possession through the neutral zone.

Game 3 looked like the point where Vegas had restored order. The Golden Knights won convincingly, their forecheck started leaning on Anaheim’s defence pairings, and the Ducks’ rush opportunities became harder to generate cleanly. The previous article, “Golden Knights vs Ducks Game 4 Odds: Vegas Regains Control After Anaheim’s Speed Formula Breaks Down”, focused on whether Anaheim had enough tactical flexibility left once Vegas adjusted to their transition game. The oddsmakers leaned heavily toward Vegas in Game 4 because the Knights had finally slowed the game down to their terms.

Then Anaheim flipped the script again.

Anaheim’s Young Core Has Forced Vegas Into a Faster Series

Game 4 became the clearest example yet of why this matchup refuses to settle. Anaheim won 4-3 behind three assists from Cutter Gauthier, while Beckett Sennecke and Alex Killorn each produced a goal and an assist. More importantly, Anaheim finally broke through on the power play after going scoreless on their first 11 opportunities in the series.

That matters because Vegas have quietly looked uncomfortable whenever Anaheim push the game into quick-transition hockey. The Ducks are not dominating possession for entire games, but they are generating enough speed through the neutral zone to keep Vegas from fully establishing their layered defensive structure.

Gauthier has been one of the biggest factors in the series. His speed forces Vegas defenders into earlier decisions, and once Anaheim enter the zone with pace, the Ducks suddenly become dangerous off second-chance movement. Sennecke’s confidence has also grown visibly through the series, and his willingness to attack aggressively has prevented Anaheim from looking intimidated by the moment.

Vegas still have enormous offensive talent. Jack Eichel produced two assists in Game 4, Mitch Marner added three more, and Tomas Hertl finally ended a 29-game goal drought late in the third period. But there is a difference between generating offence and controlling a series, and Vegas have not consistently controlled Anaheim the way this price suggests.

Mark Stone’s Absence Changed More Than the Lineup Card

The Game 4 loss also came without Mark Stone, who missed the game due to a lower-body injury suffered late in Game 3. That absence mattered immediately because Stone normally settles Vegas during chaotic stretches. His defensive positioning, puck support, and ability to slow the emotional pace of playoff games are difficult to replace.

Without him, Vegas looked less composed defending Anaheim’s quick pressure. The Ducks were able to attack earlier in possessions instead of constantly getting stalled along the walls.

That creates an interesting Game 5 betting problem. Oddsmakers are still giving Vegas strong home-favourite status because playoff experience and depth still matter enormously in these spots. Vegas also know how to respond after ugly losses, especially at T-Mobile Arena where their crowd pressure can completely change momentum swings.

But Anaheim no longer look like a team simply happy to be here.

This is exactly the type of playoff matchup that belongs inside the NHL Betting Hub, because bettors now have to separate reputation from what the actual series flow is showing. Vegas still carry the bigger names and deeper pedigree, but Anaheim’s speed has repeatedly forced the Golden Knights away from their comfort zone.

Why the Total Says This Series Is No Longer Fully Under Vegas’ Control

The total at 6.5 also deserves attention. Early in the series, there was a stronger argument that Vegas could turn this into controlled playoff hockey built around structure and defensive patience. Now the games are becoming more volatile. Anaheim are creating rush pressure, special teams have started influencing games, and Vegas are spending more time defending laterally.

The oddsmakers have this set at Vegas -141, but the reality suggests Anaheim have already proven this series is far closer stylistically than the number implies.

The Ducks also continue playing with the emotional freedom that younger playoff teams sometimes carry deep into spring. They are attacking instead of protecting. Vegas, meanwhile, now have the pressure of expectation again.

Vegas are still being priced like the more stable playoff machine, but Anaheim’s pace has already changed the structure of the matchup several times.

The NHL Betting Guide matters here too because bettors often overvalue experience once a series becomes emotionally volatile. Experience helps, but if the older team starts defending too much against faster legs, the gap can shrink quickly.

Best Pick

Vegas absolutely have the talent to reclaim control at home. Eichel and Marner continue creating offence, and the biggest risk with backing Anaheim is that Vegas finally establish the slower, heavier game they have been chasing for much of the series. A stronger defensive response from the Golden Knights could suffocate Anaheim’s transition opportunities quickly.

Still, Anaheim have already proven they can survive Vegas’ adjustments, and the Ducks now look fully comfortable with the pace and emotional swings of the series. At plus money, the value sits with the side consistently forcing the matchup away from the favourite’s ideal conditions.
