Gerrit Cole Keeps Shrinking Houston’s Margin

Pick: New York Yankees -156
Projected score: Yankees 5, Astros 3

New York asks Gerrit Cole to win the series Thursday, and Bookmaker Sportsbook makes the Yankees -156 favorites against Houston at +138.

Cole enters at 7-6 with a 3.11 ERA. More important for this matchup, he has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five straight starts, posting a 1.47 ERA across 30⅔ innings. Hayden Wesneski counters after five scoreless innings against the Athletics in his latest start.

Twenty-Two First Pitches Found Strikes

Gerrit Cole threw first-pitch strikes to 22 of 23 Orioles in his previous start, the highest rate of his career. He completed six innings while earning career win No. 160.

“We’re commanding the ball well and making good decisions,” Cole said before facing Houston.

That command changes Thursday’s game because Houston cannot afford long stretches chasing counts. The Astros managed four hits Wednesday and have scored three runs or fewer in nine of their last 16 games. Cole has increasingly been able to begin plate appearances from ahead, then use his four-seamer and breaking pitches without surrendering predictable hitter’s counts.

Cole’s last start began 22 plate appearances at 0-1.

Houston’s Bullpen Has Been Keeping Receipts

Joe Espada has acknowledged the pressure on a bullpen carrying too many innings. Before Wednesday, no Astros starter had completed six innings in more than two weeks, while Houston’s bullpen ERA had climbed to 4.14 in August.

Peter Lambert gave Houston 5⅔ innings Wednesday, but the Yankees broke a 3-3 tie with four runs in the seventh against the relief corps. Espada preserved several higher-leverage arms once the game escaped, which helps Thursday. It does not erase the cumulative workload.

Wesneski therefore carries more than his own matchup. Five innings may not be enough if Gerrit Cole again pushes into the sixth or seventh.

The MLB Betting Hub is useful here because the starter comparison is only half the handicap. The MLB Playoffs Betting Guide adds the September context: Houston is defending a division lead by a slim margin, while New York is trying to secure its Wild Card position and stay within reach of Tampa Bay.

The Series Has Reached Its Ace

Wesneski has been encouraging since returning from Tommy John surgery, including four Astros wins in five starts and a 3.04 ERA across four of those outings.

Gerrit Cole is the harder assignment.

His recent command reduces Houston’s opportunities to extend innings, and New York’s lineup has produced 22 runs across its last two games.
