Gerrit Cole Gets the Uneven Assignment

The moneyline asks too much at -199. The run line is more interesting because Tuesday gives Gerrit Cole a very different assignment from the one facing Grayson Rodriguez.

Seven Runs Is the Separation

Gerrit Cole enters with a 3.19 ERA. Rodriguez is at 6.03. That gap doesn’t guarantee anything Tuesday, but it defines the problem Los Angeles has to solve before its bullpens become relevant.

Cole’s return from Tommy John surgery has developed into genuine rotation stability. He has completed at least six innings in four of his past five starts and has not allowed more than three earned runs in any outing since returning.

Rodriguez has not established the same floor. His 65 strikeouts in 68⅔ innings show that the raw stuff can still miss bats, but 32 walks and a 1.56 WHIP leave considerably more traffic for a Yankees lineup that does not need to overpower him to create scoring opportunities.

Judge Is Here, But Not Yet

Aaron Judge traveled with the Yankees to Southern California, but Boone has made clear that the captain is there to continue his rehabilitation rather than face the Angels.

That keeps Tuesday’s offensive responsibility with the lineup New York already has.

Spencer Jones provides one immediate source of power against Rodriguez. Ben Rice remains an on-base threat near the top of the order, while Heliot Ramos gives Boone another right-handed option after becoming increasingly important against left-handed pitching.

Los Angeles can answer with Mike Trout and Zach Neto, and Cole cannot simply attack the middle of the zone. His task is nevertheless narrower than Rodriguez’s: limit traffic ahead of the Angels’ most dangerous bats and force the rest of the lineup to beat him.

The Bullpen Has a New Variable

New York’s late innings are worth watching. Fernando Cruz is on the injured list with elbow discomfort, while the Yankees claimed John Schreiber on Monday. Schreiber held right-handed hitters to a .143/.184/.231 line with Kansas City this season and gives Boone another potential matchup option once he joins the active roster.
