Fręch Finds Iva Jovic’s Second Serve Again
Iva Jovic beat Magdalena Fręch two weeks ago. Guadalajara has changed the part of the matchup Fręch disliked most.
After their US Open meeting, Fręch described the New York court as unexpectedly slow and said she struggled to find her timing. She arrives at Thursday’s rematch having won four straight sets in conditions where she has already been champion.
Jovic knows the difference. After beating Zeynep Sönmez, she said there are “no secrets” between them and specifically noted that Fręch knows how to play these conditions.
The unresolved problem is Jovic’s serve. If Fręch can reach it often enough, this rematch can become considerably tighter than the market expects.
Forty-Eight Percent Opens the Door
Iva Jovic beat Sönmez 7-6(5), 6-4, but the score disguises how frequently her service games became vulnerable. She landed only 48% of first serves, won 44% of her second-serve points, and was broken four times. Sönmez actually won two more total points.
Jovic survived because she was better when the score compressed, converting five of 10 break points and closing both sets.
Fręch now brings a steadier serving platform in the same conditions. Against Dolehide, she landed 66% of first serves and won 71% behind them in a 6-4, 6-3 victory. That difference can move pressure toward Jovic’s second delivery rather than leaving Fręch constantly defending her own.
Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line: Iva Jovic -370, Magdalena Fręch +281. Jovic is -4.5 games at -119, with Fręch +4.5 at -103. The total opened at 20.5 games, over -104 and under -118. My lean is Magdalena Fręch +4.5 games at -103.

New York Hid Fręch’s Best Route
Iva Jovic’s 7-5, 6-3 US Open victory remains useful because Fręch initially found a way into the match.
She led 3-0 and had opportunities to reach 4-1 before Jovic recovered. Rain interrupted the first set at 4-4, and Fręch later said the disruption compounded her difficulty adjusting to the slow court.
The lesson for Thursday is not that Fręch almost won a set. It is that Jovic was already giving her service openings before taking over.
Guadalajara has strengthened Fręch’s side of that equation. Across wins over Nao Hibino and Dolehide, she has been broken only three times and has won 62% of second-serve points.

Four Breaks Change the Handicap
Jovic remains the stronger favorite for obvious reasons. She is ranked No. 16, owns a 21-10 hard-court record this season, and returns as the defending Guadalajara champion. Fręch is No. 57 and entered the week with a 19-22 season record.
But -4.5 games asks a different question from who wins. Jovic has already spent more than two hours navigating one straight-sets match here. Fręch has played two matches without dropping a set, and her first-serve percentage across the tournament stands at 66%.
If Jovic repeats Wednesday’s second-serve exposure, Fręch does not require an upset to threaten the number. She requires enough return pressure to prevent the favorite from separating.
The danger is Jovic finding more first serves and attacking Fręch before rallies settle. Her first delivery won 68% of its points against Sönmez, and the American has already shown she can escape difficult scorelines in these conditions.
Four breaks conceded make laying 4.5 games uncomfortable anyway.
Betting lean: Magdalena Fręch +4.5 games at -103.
