Foster Griffin Brings Baltimore Its Harder Split
Baltimore has already shown Cleveland where its power can come from. Wednesday changes the geometry. Foster Griffin is left-handed, and Coby Mayo gave Cleveland something that has been one of baseball’s most dangerous hitters against lefties, and Cleveland is handing Griffin a game with direct consequences for the American League wild-card race.
The complication for Baltimore is Griffin himself. He enters at 15-4 with a 3.26 ERA, while Shane Baz brings a 5-15 record and 3.91 ERA into the other side of a matchup priced almost as a coin flip.
Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line: Guardians -106, Orioles -106, total 8.5. Pick: Guardians -106.
Mayo Gets The Hand He Wanted
Mayo’s two-homer game Monday was not an isolated warning. His first homer that afternoon was his 16th against left-handed pitching, the most in MLB at the time.
That makes him the obvious stress point for Griffin. Baltimore was 22-25 against left-handed starters entering Wednesday, but Mayo gives the Orioles one hitter capable of overturning that broader split with a single mistake.
Foster Griffin’s task is therefore less about navigating Baltimore generically than about controlling where Mayo gets his opportunities, particularly if Pete Alonso and Gunnar Henderson create traffic around him.

Cleveland Just Changed Baz’s Margin
Tuesday gave Cleveland something it rarely gives Tanner Bibee: immediate offense. Travis Bazzana hit a three-run homer, every Guardians starter either scored or drove in a run, and Cleveland reached Brandon Young for six runs before the fourth inning was over.
That matters Wednesday because Baz cannot simply assume Cleveland will reproduce the low-scoring version of itself. His 3.91 ERA is respectable, but the 5-15 record accompanies an Orioles team now 70-76 and coming off its seventh loss in eight games.
Bazzana is particularly relevant after Tuesday. The rookie now has 10 homers and 18 stolen bases, adding another left-handed problem for Baz near the top of Cleveland’s order.

Tuesday Left Both Bullpens Footprints
Neither starter delivered length Tuesday. Bibee exited after 4⅓ innings and Young after 3⅔, forcing both managers into extended relief work. Cleveland’s bullpen was the difference, covering the final 4⅔ innings without allowing another run.
That increases the value of Foster Griffin reaching the later innings on Wednesday. Cleveland entered this series with a 3.07 bullpen ERA since August 4, almost identical to Baltimore’s 3.09, so there was little structural separation between the relief units before the workload accumulated.
The starter who leaves fewer outs behind may decide which bullpen gets to operate normally.
Minus 106 Trusts Foster Griffin’s Floor
Baz has enough swing-and-miss ability to make Cleveland’s Tuesday eruption disappear quickly. But the same price is being offered on Griffin, whose 15-4 record, 3.26 ERA, and 142 strikeouts give Cleveland the stronger season-long starting profile.
Betting lean: Guardians -106.
The danger is Mayo against a left-hander. If Griffin gives Baltimore’s hottest platoon threat men on base to drive home, the pitching advantage can vanish with one swing. At an even price, Cleveland’s better starting-pitcher profile and the pressure its lineup just placed on Baltimore’s staff are enough to take the Guardians.
