Five Hours Separate Zverev and Botic

Botic van de Zandschulp has already spent this US Open proving he can survive. Now he needs to prove he can avoid surviving for too long.

The Dutchman reached Wednesday’s quarterfinal by coming from two sets down against Arthur Gea in a five-hour, 13-minute match, the longest contest of this year’s tournament. Alexander Zverev, by contrast, dismissed Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(3) and was joking afterward about finally finishing before midnight.

Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line lists Zverev at -909, Van de Zandschulp at +576, and Zverev -6.5 at -114. I predict Zverev in four sets, with Van de Zandschulp +6.5 offering the more interesting price.

Five Hours Changed the Assignment

Van de Zandschulp’s comeback against Gea demonstrated toughness, but it also exposed the cost of playing from behind.

He made 16 unforced errors in the opening set, squandered a 4-1 lead in the second and did not finally escape until the fifth. He also had to save match point in the third-set tiebreak before dragging the contest another two hours.

That matters because Zverev does not need Van de Zandschulp to collapse physically. He only needs the Dutchman to arrive a fraction slower to the first heavy backhand, defend one extra ball from behind the baseline, or leave one short second serve sitting in the strike zone.

De Minaur Revealed the Better Version

Van de Zandschulp already showed what the upset path should look like earlier in New York.

Against No. 6 seed Alex de Minaur, he won 6-4, 7-5, 6-2. That result matters here because Van de Zandschulp wasn’t just hanging around waiting for fatigue or errors. He took time away, held his ground, and kept De Minaur from repeatedly resetting rallies.

Zverev presents a much harder version of that problem. The German owns the bigger first serve and can absorb pace off the backhand without surrendering position. Van de Zandschulp therefore needs his first strike to create genuinely short points, not just good-looking opening shots.

Zverev Finally Stopped Paying Interest

Zverev opened this tournament with consecutive five-setters against Lorenzo Sonego and Quentin Halys.

Since then, he has played six straight sets without losing one, beating Alejandro Tabilo 6-2, 7-6(2), 6-2 and then Darderi in straight sets.

The timing is awkward for Van de Zandschulp. The Dutchman would have preferred Zverev to be still carrying nine hours of early-round work. Instead, Zverev has spent two matches chipping away at that debt, while Van de Zandschulp has just produced the tournament’s longest match.

That does not make the quarterfinal automatic. It does make long baseline exchanges increasingly expensive for the underdog.

Prediction: Alexander Zverev wins 6-4, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.

Six And A Half Survives One Set

The moneyline offers almost nothing at Zverev’s price. The spread is more interesting because Van de Zandschulp does not need to threaten the upset. One competitive set and one stolen set can leave Zverev winning comfortably without covering 6.5 games.

Betting Lean

Botic van de Zandschulp +6.5 at -108.

Van de Zandschulp has already beaten De Minaur in straight sets and shown enough first-strike quality to keep individual sets close. The concern is sustaining that level across five sets after Monday’s workload, not whether he can produce it at all.
