Fernando Tatis Jr. Keeps Turning Up the Volume

Pick: San Diego Padres -113
Projected score: Padres 4, Pirates 2

San Diego is only a modest home favorite at Bookmaker Sportsbook despite entering Monday on opposite rails from Pittsburgh. Braxton Ashcraft gives the Pirates a legitimate reason to be cautious: he is 13-5 with a 3.74 ERA and has worked 17 innings over his last two starts, allowing two earned runs. Robbie Ray counters at 11-7 with a 3.20 ERA after holding the Mets to one run over six innings last Tuesday.

The moneyline is preferable to laying -1.5 at +159. San Diego doesn’t need to win extravagantly; it just needs to keep doing what it’s been doing lately.

Five Games Have Produced Eleven Tatis Jr. Hits

Fernando Tatis Jr. went 4-for-5 with two homers and four RBIs in Sunday’s 8-1 win over Minnesota. Over his last five games, he is 12-for-22 with four homers and 10 RBIs. His last 15 games have produced a .340/.419/.792 slash line.

Tatis has stopped being San Diego’s interesting subplot. He is becoming the schedule.

That changes the assignment for Ashcraft. Pittsburgh’s right-hander has been extraordinarily efficient, needing only 85 pitches for a complete game against Miami and 80 for eight innings against Detroit. His success has come through execution and early weak contact rather than laborious at-bats.

Tatis is currently difficult to dispose of cheaply. His combination of contact, power, and improving strike-zone control puts pressure on exactly the economy Ashcraft has ridden through his best stretch.

Pittsburgh Just Left Six Runs in Los Angeles

The Pirates scored seven runs across three losses to the Dodgers, then managed only two hits in Sunday’s 4-0 shutout. San Diego scored 21 runs while sweeping Minnesota.

Sunday also gave San Diego’s bullpen an easier afternoon after Walker Buehler supplied six innings; the relievers covered three scoreless frames. Saturday was more demanding after Casey Mize exited in the third inning, but the rotation reset matters entering Monday.

For readers using the MLB Betting Hub, current form deserves more weight than Pittsburgh’s attractive starter. The MLB Playoffs Betting Guide also provides the bigger picture: San Diego is protecting a Wild Card spot while Arizona sits two games behind.

At -113, the price does not demand much compensation for that difference.
