Faizon Brandon Meets Texas Without Training Wheels

Faizon Brandon’s first three college starts have allowed Tennessee to introduce its freshman quarterback politely. Texas represents the end of the introductions.

Brandon reaches his first SEC start with seven touchdown passes, two interceptions and three Tennessee victories behind him. Josh Heupel has praised his decisiveness rather than asking him to manufacture fireworks, and Brandon has described the same calculation from inside the offense: avoid forcing the football while recognizing when the deep opportunity appears.

Against Texas, patience encounters a defense that has spent three games making patience expensive.

Texas Has Been Hiding Manning’s Margin

Arch Manning arrives at Neyland with 664 passing yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions, but Texas has not required its quarterback to make every possession beautiful.

The Longhorns’ defense has allowed only 19 points through three games. UTSA managed 143 total yards and converted one of 11 third downs last week.

That changes Brandon’s arithmetic. Tennessee can live with short completions when they keep the offense on schedule. Against Texas, one failed series can leave considerably more work waiting on the next possession.

Heupel’s description of Manning was revealing. He emphasized the Texas quarterback’s command and resilience rather than his statistics, pointing specifically to how Manning continued playing through adversity against Ohio State.

Smothers Leaves Texas With An Opening

Texas has its own complications. Leading rusher Hollywood Smothers, who has 198 yards and two touchdowns on 41 carries, remains questionable with a lower-leg injury. Reports have raised legitimate concern about his availability. Offensive lineman Jordan Coleman and tight end Nick Townsend are out.

The defensive news is better. Edge rusher Colin Simmons has come off the availability report after initially being listed probable, putting one of Texas’ most important pressure players back into the equation against Brandon.

Tennessee also carries confirmed absences. Starting tight end Ethan Davis is out for the season with an ACL injury, while linebacker Jaedon Harmon is unavailable.

Five Points Test Faizon Brandon’s Patience

Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line: Texas -5 at -112, with Tennessee +5 at -104. Texas is -205 on the moneyline, and Tennessee is +178. The total is 55, with the over -102 and the under -114.

Texas’ defensive advantage supports favoritism. Five points asks something slightly different.

It asks Texas to create separation at Neyland while its leading rusher may be unavailable and its offense has not consistently matched the defense’s authority.

Tennessee’s path is narrower. Brandon’s willingness to accept underneath windows becomes valuable only while the score remains close. Texas turning one freshman mistake into a short field changes the entire afternoon.

Three games have shown that Brandon can operate Heupel’s offense. Texas gets to ask whether he can chase it.

Prediction: Texas 27, Tennessee 24.

Betting Lean: Tennessee +5 (-104).
