Elina Svitolina Keeps Moving the Finish Line
Anna Kalinskaya does not need to prove she can hit through Elina Svitolina. She needs to prove she can keep doing it after Svitolina has taken away the first clean strike. That is a considerably nastier assignment.
Kalinskaya reaches Friday’s US Open third round after beating Xinyu Wang 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. Svitolina required three sets of her own against Maya Joint, recovering from the loss of a second-set tiebreak to win 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-4. Neither, therefore, arrives protected by the illusion of effortless progress. Both have already had to solve trouble in New York.
The difference is what happens when trouble stretches into another ball.
Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line: Elina Svitolina -256, Anna Kalinskaya +202. Svitolina is -4 games at -114, with Kalinskaya +4 at -108. The total is 21.5 games, over -116 and under -105. My lean is Svitolina -256.
The First Opening May Be False
Kalinskaya’s cleanest route through this match is also the narrowest: establish court position early and prevent Svitolina from turning neutral exchanges into movement tests.
Her second-round numbers expose the complication. Kalinskaya struck four aces against Wang but also committed eight double faults and faced 11 break points. She survived eight of them and, critically, won 60% of her second-serve points.
Svitolina gives that second delivery a different examination. Her defense is no longer merely about retrieval. She has spent 2026 coupling her established movement with greater attacking weight, and her first-round demolition of Solana Sierra illustrated the result: 92% of first-serve points won and four conversions from five break opportunities.
That threatens Kalinskaya at the precise moment she wants to establish rhythm. If Svitolina can put enough returns back with depth, Kalinskaya must repeatedly create the point rather than finish it.

Cincinnati Left Something Unanswered
I have a legitimate physical question about the favorite. Svitolina withdrew before her Cincinnati third-round match on August 18 because of a right ankle injury originally sustained in Toronto. She said doctors advised her to rest and “recover completely.”
Her US Open evidence is considerably more reassuring than speculation about that ankle. Svitolina dispatched Sierra in 51 minutes before spending more than two hours defeating Joint. She has therefore completed both a short, authoritative match and a prolonged three-set examination since returning.
Kalinskaya carries her own recent physical footnote. Her Cincinnati run ended when she retired against Sorana Cirstea after reaching the third set. Since arriving in New York, however, she has completed a straight-sets first-round win over Anna Blinkova and Wednesday’s three-set victory over Wang.

Doha Is the Uncomfortable Evidence
Svitolina leads their completed tour-level meetings 4-1, including a 6-1, 6-1 victory in Berlin in June. Kalinskaya’s exception is instructive rather than decorative: she beat Svitolina 6-4, 6-3 in Doha earlier this season.
So this is not a matchup Kalinskaya is structurally incapable of winning. It is one in which her margin for losing control of rallies is smaller.
Svitolina has already shown at this tournament that she can win quickly or remain functional deep into a third set. Kalinskaya can take the racket out of almost anyone’s hands when her timing, first strike and court position align. Friday asks whether she can preserve those conditions against an opponent specifically equipped to disturb them.
That is also the risk in laying -256. Kalinskaya has already beaten Svitolina this year, and her aggressive baseline game gives her a genuine route to controlling enough first-strike exchanges to make favorite pricing uncomfortable.
But Svitolina does not need every rally to become long. She needs enough of them to make Kalinskaya hit the additional difficult ball.
Betting lean: Elina Svitolina -256.
