Eight Innings Meet Zac Thornton’s Ten Starts
Betting Lean: New York Mets -120
The New York Mets line opened at -120 at Bookmaker Sportsbook; Houston is +106, and the total is 9. The Mets are the play.
Sunday’s series decider puts Zac Thornton’s 2.88 ERA against Ethan Pecko, who has pitched eight innings in the majors. That difference becomes more important because Houston cannot treat Pecko’s start as an isolated experiment. Its pitching staff has been searching for innings all month.
Houston Has Used Seventeen Starters
Pecko became No. 17 when Houston promoted him on August 19, tying the franchise record for starting pitchers used in a season.
His first two major-league starts produced a 7.88 ERA and 1.88 WHIP across eight innings. Houston’s bullpen has already spent August compensating for short starts, with Joe Espada acknowledging the accumulated workload during a stretch of 13 games without an off day.
Saturday did little to simplify Sunday. Bennett Sousa opened and recorded two outs before Cristian Javier supplied 3⅔ innings. AJ Blubaugh, Enyel De Los Santos and Steven Okert then finished the game.
Pecko therefore has two jobs: handle a Mets lineup that just became deeper and give Houston innings.
Soto Changed Zac Thornton’s Assignment Too
Juan Soto returned Saturday after missing 31 games with a calf strain.
He skipped a rehab assignment, started at DH, and immediately drove in the go-ahead run. New York intends to manage his workload, but his return restores an elite on-base threat behind Francisco Lindor.
That also creates the interesting counterweight to the MLB Betting Hub case for New York: Thornton must face Houston’s best hitter.
Yordan Alvarez homered Saturday for his 37th of the season and entered the weekend leading the American League in several major offensive categories. Mets interim manager Andy Green compared the experience of facing him to dealing with Barry Bonds.
Zac Thornton does not overpower hitters. He has only 40 strikeouts in 56⅓ innings. His value has come from preventing traffic and damage: a 1.15 WHIP through his first 10 major-league starts.

Six Innings Keep Appearing
Zac Thornton held Milwaukee to one run over six innings Tuesday.
That outing followed a pattern rather than creating one. The rookie has already given New York enough length to establish himself as a legitimate rotation option, and Green praised both his composure and competitiveness after the Milwaukee start.
For readers following the AL West through the MLB Playoffs Betting Guide, that uncertainty carries extra weight. Houston is .500 and still leads its division. Every experimental rotation turn now arrives with October attached.
At -120, New York gets the established rookie starter, Soto back in the lineup and a Houston staff still trying to manufacture innings.
Prediction: Mets 5-3 Astros
Betting Lean: New York Mets -120
