Eight Absences Test NYCFC’s Structure
New York City FC does not have to solve Nashville SC’s entire attack Friday night. It first has to work out how to function without a substantial part of its own structure.
Pascal Jansen will be without eight players: Alonso Martínez, Maxi Moralez, Keaton Parks, Talles Magno, Aiden O’Neill, Kevin O’Toole, Max Murray and Drew Baiera. Three of those absences remove a starting-caliber striker and two midfielders capable of controlling possession or advancing the ball through pressure. Against the MLS leader, that is not routine squad rotation. It changes where NYCFC can safely play.
Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line prices NYCFC at +152, Nashville at +163, and the draw at +253, while Over 2.5 goals opens at -141. The shorter NYCFC price requires more faith in the depleted home side than the available evidence warrants. The betting lean is Nashville SC +163.
Nashville SC Can Attack the Missing Spaces
Nashville SC arrives at 16-2-4 with 52 points, four consecutive league wins and the most points ever collected through 22 games of an MLS season. Sam Surridge scored his 13th league goal against Cincinnati, Cristian Espinoza supplied his 11th assist, and Hany Mukhtar added a goal and an assist in the 4-0 victory.
The important part isn’t raw production. It is how Nashville distributes responsibility. B.J. Callaghan described the mechanism after the Cincinnati win: the attacking players receive freedom because the players behind them are also executing their assignments. That collective platform allows Surridge, Mukhtar and Espinoza to attack different layers without every forward movement destabilizing the rest of the side.
That is uncomfortable for an NYCFC midfield missing Parks, Moralez and O’Neill simultaneously. New York can replace bodies. Replacing their combined functions is harder.

NYCFC Fernández Mercau Carries the Counterargument
NYCFC still has the player capable of making the price look less peculiar. Nicolás Fernández Mercau has operated across the attacking line this season, including as the central forward when Martínez has been unavailable, and his positional flexibility gives Jansen a way to build an attack without a conventional No. 9.
There is also direct matchup evidence that Nashville may become too comfortable. NYCFC beat Callaghan’s team 2-1 at Yankee Stadium in their previous meeting there, with New York finding the decisive goal after halftime.
The problem Friday is replication. Moralez and Martínez both participated in that victory and are unavailable now. The previous solution therefore cannot simply be photocopied.
Our Soccer Data Betting guide explains why lineup changes deserve more weight when they alter several connected roles rather than removing one isolated player.

The Price Leaves Little Protection
Nashville’s four-game winning run has included 12 goals, while Callaghan’s side is unbeaten in 15 of its last 16 MLS matches. The concern with taking +163 is not Nashville’s underlying form. It is whether NYCFC can compress the game at home, deny clean transitions and force Nashville into the kind of slow possession that reduces Surridge’s penalty-area service.
That risk is real, particularly because NYCFC has already shown it can beat this opponent at Yankee Stadium.
But the current price makes the depleted team the favorite. With Nashville carrying the healthier attacking structure and NYCFC missing pieces through the center of the field and forward line, Nashville SC +163 is the operational betting position.
