Eduardo Rodriguez Meets Phillies’ August Rewrite

Eduardo Rodriguez gets Philadelphia at an awkward moment. For most of 2026, left-handed pitching has been one of the clearest ways to reduce the Phillies’ offense. Philadelphia owns only a .704 OPS against lefties this season.

August has looked different: that figure climbed to .773 during the month. Rodriguez now gets to find out whether that change holds up against the best version of him Arizona has seen all year.

Philadelphia is -141 at Bookmaker Sportsbook, Arizona is +125, and the total is 7.5.

The pick is Diamondbacks +125.

What Happens If August Is Real?

Philadelphia’s recent improvement against left-handers removes an easy assumption from Tuesday’s matchup.

Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber still give the lineup enormous left-handed power, while Luis Arraez has added another difficult plate appearance near the top. The Phillies have become less dependent on waiting for one swing to rescue an inning.

Rodriguez arrives with his own change. His last three starts have produced just two earned runs across 18⅔ innings. Against the Cubs last Wednesday, he allowed two hits over seven scoreless innings and struck out nine.

Afterward, Rodriguez said: “This is the best I’ve felt all year on the mound.”

That is far more relevant to Tuesday than his 14-4 record. Philadelphia is bringing an improving approach against lefties into a matchup with a left-hander whose command has just reached its sharpest point.

Luzardo Makes The Diamondbacks +125 Possible

Arizona doesn’t have an easy opposing starter. Jesús Luzardo is 12-5 with a 3.09 ERA and 203 strikeouts. His latest start was seven scoreless innings with one hit allowed and nine strikeouts against Seattle.

The pitch underneath much of that success is his sweeper. Through August 21, opponents batted .117 against it, and it generated 113 strikeouts.

Arizona, however, has been unusually productive against left-handed pitching, carrying roughly a .780 OPS against southpaws this season. Ketel Marte is also back on the active roster after being reinstated Monday.

The MLB Betting Hub and MLB Playoffs Betting Guide provide the wider September picture. This game comes down to something narrower: two elite left-handers facing offenses that have handled left-handed pitching very differently.

Why Is Eduardo Rodriguez the Underdog?

Luzardo’s strikeout ceiling explains much of Philadelphia’s -141 price. Rodriguez’s current form makes +125 harder to ignore.

He owns a 2.50 ERA and 1.19 WHIP, has allowed two runs across his last three starts, and gets an Arizona lineup that has produced considerably better against lefties than Philadelphia has across the season.

That is enough separation at the price.

Prediction: Diamondbacks 3-2.

Betting lean: Arizona +125.
