Donna Vekic Cannot Let Talia Gibson Settle.

Donna Vekic and Talia Gibson arrive at the US Open separated by 25 ranking places and almost a decade of tour experience.

Bookmaker Sportsbook barely separates them at all. Vekic is -116, Gibson -105, for their first career meeting Sunday on Court 5. The market has effectively stripped away the résumé and asked a narrower question: which player controls the first meaningful shot after the serve?

Five Losses Followed the Trophy

Donna Vekic won Queen’s in June. She has not won since. Her five-match losing streak now includes three consecutive North American hard-court defeats in three sets: Viktorija Golubic in Toronto, Xinyu Wang in Cincinnati, and Diane Parry in Monterrey.

The Cincinnati numbers exposed the pressure point. Vekic landed 62% of her first serves against Wang but won only 64% of those points. On second serve, she won 54%. Wang generated nine break opportunities and converted four.

Vekic’s first strike is normally one way she prevents opponents from establishing themselves in rallies.

Talia Gibson comes to New York looking specifically for that establishment.

Gibson Has Been Waiting for Cement

After a difficult clay-and-grass stretch, Gibson said this month she had been “looking forward to” returning to hard courts.

Her objective was equally revealing: find her rhythm without attaching pressure to results. That approach has already produced wins over Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Roland Garros finalist Maja Chwalinska in Toronto. At the same time, Gibson also pushed world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to a second-set tiebreak in Cincinnati.

Gibson described her preferred hard-court approach after beating Chwalinska: commit to her game, attack and “take as much time away” from the opponent.

Forty-Eight Percent Opens the Door

Gibson’s own serve is the complication. Against Sabalenka, she put only 48% of her first serves into play and committed seven double faults. She won 59% behind the first serve and faced seven break points.

Sabalenka is a brutal benchmark, but Vekic does not need Sabalenka’s power to recognize the invitation.

If Gibson repeatedly starts points behind second serves, Vekic can attack before Gibson establishes the baseline position she wants. If Gibson’s first-serve percentage rises, the Australian has the weight of shot to make Vekic defend more often than the Croatian would prefer.

The Tennis Betting Hub and WTA Betting Guide offer the broader tournament context, but this match is unusually self-contained.

Bookmakers Found Almost Nothing Between Them

Bookmaker Sportsbook prices Vekic at -116 and Gibson at -105. Vekic -0.5 games is -111, while Gibson +0.5 is -110.

The total sits at 21.5 games, with the under at -112 and the over at -109.

Vekic has the better Grand Slam résumé and the more proven serve. Gibson has produced the better 2026 hard-court season: she reached the Indian Wells quarterfinals, the Miami fourth round and climbed as high as No. 55.

Vekic’s current losing streak makes paying for experience difficult when the market is offering Gibson essentially at even money.

The Australian’s return position and willingness to attack second serves give her the clearer route into the matchup if Vekic’s recent service vulnerability follows her to New York.

Prediction: Talia Gibson in three sets.

Betting Lean: Talia Gibson Moneyline (-105)
