Denver Summit Won the First Meeting. Portland Thorns Haven’t Lost at Home Since September.

Denver Summit already knows how to beat Portland. Doing it at Providence Park is another matter.

The Denver Summit won the first meeting 2-1 on July 18 at Centennial Stadium, overturning Sophia Wilson’s first-half penalty through Janine Sonis before Natalie Means found the winner in the 86th minute. Portland now return home having beaten Orlando Pride 2-1 and extended their regular-season unbeaten run at Providence Park to 12 matches.

The Thorns are fourth in the NWSL on 34 points. Denver sits 10th on 24 points. And Janine Sonis has seven goal contributions in Denver’s last seven matches.

The 86th Minute Is Still Sitting There

Portland led the first meeting through Wilson’s 25th-minute penalty. Denver answered just before halftime when Sonis’ delivery found its way into the Portland goal, then kept pushing the Thorns deeper after the break. Means finally broke the tie in the 86th minute, receiving the ball on the left side of the box and finding the far corner.

Portland spent too much of that second half defending the width of their own penalty area.

Denver’s ability to move the point of attack forced the Thorns’ back line to keep shifting, and the winning goal came from exactly that sort of lateral stress. Portland cannot simply protect the center and wait for Denver to run out of ideas. But Sonis gives the Summit another route.

Seven Matches, Seven Goal Contributions

Janine Sonis arrives in the strongest attacking run of her NWSL career. Her assist for Ryan against San Diego took her to 12 total goal contributions this season, already surpassing her previous career high. Seven have come in Denver’s last seven matches.

The important part is where those contributions originate. Sonis can deliver early from wide positions, receive between the lines, or move beyond the first defensive pressure before releasing another runner. Ryan has benefited from that movement and has now scored in consecutive matches.

Portland’s midfield must therefore decide when to follow Janine Sonis and when to hold itsshape.

Eight Minutes Was Enough for Caiya Hanks

Portland’s win over Orlando produced an entirely different story.

Caiya Hanks came on in the 88th minute, playing her first match since June 2025 after recovering from an ACL injury. Eight minutes later, she curled the stoppage-time winner into the net.

Her return changes Rob Gale’s bench. Portland already have Wilson, Deyna Castellanos and Pietra Tordin supplying different attacking profiles. Tordin has nine assists, tied for the league lead, while Castellanos scored her first goal of the season against Orlando.

Hanks now gives Portland another runner who can attack tired defenders late rather than asking the starters to solve every version of the match themselves.

Olivia Moultrie remains unavailable after suffering a season-ending injury, so some of that attacking responsibility has shifted elsewhere.

Providence Park Has Gone Twelve League Matches Without a Loss

The Portland Thorns are 6-0-3 at home this season. The unbeaten run stretches back to September 2025, and the Orlando victory pushed it to 12 regular-season matches.

The Denver Summit arrive after a 1-1 draw at San Diego. Ryan equalized in the 58th minute after Sonis created the chance, and goalkeeper Abby Smith made four saves. Before that, Denver beat Utah 2-1, lost 2-0 to North Carolina, and drew 1-1 with Boston.

The Soccer Betting Hub offers useful context for a matchup where the first head-to-head result and current venue form point in opposite directions. The NWSL Betting Guide becomes particularly relevant when an expansion side has already shown a repeatable tactical route against a more established opponent.

Portland Thorns vs Denver Summit Betting Analysis

Bookmaker Sportsbook lists Portland at +138, Denver at +171, and the draw at +255. The total is set at 3 goals, with the under at -123 and the over at -106.

The moneyline is tighter than the table might suggest. Denver have already beaten Portland and arrive with Sonis and Ryan producing consistently. Portland counter with their Providence Park record and a deeper attacking bench than they had several weeks ago.

The total of three also reflects two teams that have been difficult to pin down defensively. Portland’s last three league games have produced 12 combined goals. Denver’s recent results have been tighter, but they scored twice against Portland in the first meeting.

The First Meeting Never Had to Deal With This Crowd

Denver’s July win was tactically convincing enough to matter. Portland’s home record is harder to dismiss.

Tordin’s supply, Wilson’s movement and the return of Hanks give the Thorns more ways to change the attack if Denver again succeeds in disrupting the first plan.

Janine Sonis should still find moments when Portland commits numbers forward. The home side has more answers available than they did in Colorado.
