Denver Summit Presses Into Gotham’s Missing Piece
Denver Summit arrives at Sunday’s match with two developments that reshape the matchup. Lindsey Heaps has returned from a knee injury, while Gotham enters the weekend with Rose Lavelle still in concussion protocol. Those changes place extra weight on the center of the field, where Denver will try to prevent the league leaders from settling into the possession sequences that normally protect their defense.
Denver also arrives after scoring six against Chicago, its biggest victory of the expansion season. Gotham brings the opposite kind of evidence: just 14 goals conceded through 22 league matches and a club-record 10-game unbeaten run.
Bookmaker Sportsbook prices Gotham at +130, Denver at +194, and the draw at +240. Denver +0.5 is -169, while Gotham -0.5 is +126. Pick: Denver Summit +0.5 (-169).
Heaps Gives Denver Summit Another First Pass
Heaps started against Chicago after missing four matches with a knee injury and played the opening 45 minutes as Denver built a 2-0 halftime lead. Nick Cushing said afterward that her minutes were deliberately managed following the layoff.
Her presence matters against Gotham because Denver does not want this match reduced to defending wave after wave. Heaps gives Cushing another player capable of receiving centrally, changing the point of attack and allowing Denver’s runners to begin higher up the field.
That becomes particularly interesting with Gotham potentially missing Lavelle. As of Saturday, she remained in concussion protocol after the head injury suffered against Angel City.

Gotham’s Fourteen Goals Hide the Trap
Backing Denver against the league leader requires acknowledging what Gotham does exceptionally well.
Ann-Katrin Berger has 10 clean sheets and an 81.1% save percentage, while Gotham has conceded a league-low 14 goals. Tierna Davidson played every minute of August as Gotham allowed only two goals across five matches.
Denver Summit, therefore, cannot assume its six-goal eruption will continue. The more relevant question is whether Denver can create enough unsettled possessions before Gotham organizes. Against Chicago, Cushing praised the team’s willingness to help one another and the attacking relationships behind the performance. Melissa Kössler scored twice, while substitutes and deeper runners also contributed.
That diversity is useful against a defense built to remove obvious routes to goal.
The NWSL Betting Guide provides additional context for handicapping home underdogs when defensive strength makes outright-win markets less attractive than the half-goal cushion.

Shaw Can Punish One Bad Turnover
Gotham does not need Lavelle to manufacture danger. Jaedyn Shaw leads the team with six goals and four assists, and her latest goal came from distance against Portland. Gotham is also unbeaten in its last 12 league matches when scoring first, making Denver’s opening phase unusually important.
That is where the handicap becomes compelling. Denver has not won a game this season while trailing at halftime. Gotham has scored 18 of its 27 league goals before the break. If Shaw and Gotham take the lead, Denver’s +0.5 position deteriorates quickly.
But Denver has already shown it can disrupt this opponent. Its 2-0 victory in New Jersey in March matters not as a historical storyline, but because Denver created better chances and punished Gotham when it became vulnerable in possession.
Now the rematch comes in Colorado, with Heaps available again and Denver four points outside the playoff places.
Gotham remains the stronger season-long side, and Berger’s form is the clearest threat to the wager. Yet Denver’s renewed midfield options, home setting, and improving attacking variety give it enough routes to keep the match level or better.
Denver Summit +0.5 (-169) is the betting lean.
