Daniel Jones Sees Spagnuolo’s Loaded Dice

Daniel Jones knows where Kansas City wants him. The unpleasant part is how many different Chiefs can put him there.

Steve Spagnuolo generated pressure with 15 defenders against Denver, sometimes rushing four and sometimes manufacturing pressure from considerably less polite directions. Indianapolis arrives after Jones faced pressure on 41.2% of his Week 1 dropbacks and completed 3 of 11 passes for nine yards when Baltimore reached him.

Jones has already identified the escape route: better first and second downs. That makes Jonathan Taylor the player standing between Indianapolis and the version of this game Kansas City wants.

Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line: Kansas City Chiefs -6 at -106, Indianapolis Colts +6 at -110. The total opened at 46.5 points, over -108 and under -108. Kansas City are -265 on the moneyline, with Indianapolis +227. My lean is Indianapolis Colts +6 at -110.

Four Rushers Can Still Become Fifteen

Kansas City’s 31-10 win over Denver contained a nasty detail for Indianapolis. The Chiefs didn’t need constant blitzing to disrupt the pocket. Five defenders produced multiple pressures, while 15 registered at least one. Denver finished with 176 total yards and converted two of 12 third downs.

That flexibility gives Spagnuolo options against Daniel Jones. Kansas City can crowd the protection picture before dropping defenders out, or threaten coverage numbers while still creating pressure with four.

Indianapolis experienced the expensive version of that problem against Baltimore. Jones was sacked twice, intercepted once and repeatedly operated behind the chains.

Taylor Decides When Spagnuolo Gets Creative

The Colts have one compelling way to keep the disguise cabinet closed. Taylor rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns against Baltimore, despite Indianapolis spending most of the game chasing the score. The Chiefs know the threat; Spagnuolo specifically discussed Taylor while preparing for this offense.

Early-down production changes everything. If Taylor creates manageable second and third downs, Indianapolis can preserve play-action, involve Tyler Warren and prevent Kansas City from turning obvious passing situations into a weekly meeting of the Spagnuolo Appreciation Society.

If he does not, Daniel Jones becomes the wager. That is considerably less comforting.

Walker Gives Indianapolis the Same Problem

Kansas City has its own way to keep the opposing quarterback uncomfortable: hand the ball to Kenneth Walker III.

In his Chiefs debut, Walker rushed for a career-high 173 yards against Denver, including a 60-yard touchdown. Kansas City finished with 220 rushing yards as a team.

Indianapolis arrives after allowing Baltimore to rush for 202 yards. That gives Kansas City a route to dictate the game without asking Patrick Mahomes to manufacture every possession.

Lou Anarumo has already changed one piece of the response. Linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither takes over the defensive communication role from safety Cam Bynum after Indianapolis repeatedly struggled to get aligned against Baltimore.

Mahomes hardly requires opponents to donate pre-snap confusion. He has traditionally managed without charitable assistance.

His own knee is not currently the concern it might have been: Mahomes practiced fully all week and carries no game designation. Kansas City will, however, be without left tackle Josh Simmons and safety Chamarri Conner. Chris Jones is questionable with a calf injury, although Andy Reid said Friday he thinks Jones should be OK.

That uncertainty matters to six points. Kansas City can create a cleaner game script through Walker, force Indianapolis toward Jones, and then let Spagnuolo start rearranging the furniture.

But Indianapolis has Taylor, a healthy starting quarterback and enough offensive weaponry to delay that script. Alec Pierce carries no game designation despite managing a heel issue.

The wager therefore lives before third down.

If Taylor keeps Jones away from Spagnuolo’s obvious passing situations, six points are generous. If Walker pushes Indianapolis into chase mode and Kansas City gets Daniel Jones where it wants him, the evening could become considerably shorter than NBC scheduled.

That is the risk. Six points pay for it.

Betting lean: Indianapolis Colts +6 at -110.
