Dallas Cowboys Lose Tyler Smith Before Giants Rush

The Dallas Cowboys built an offense that can stress almost every part of a defense. New York may get its first chance to test the one place where the Cowboys suddenly look less comfortable.

All-Pro left guard Tyler Smith is on injured reserve after thumb surgery, leaving T.J. Bass to start beside a reworked Dallas line. That matters because Brian Schottenheimer has spent the week emphasizing third-and-manageable situations, while the Giants can send Brian Burns, Abdul Carter and Dexter Lawrence at the replacement structure protecting Dak Prescott.

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line has Dallas -3 at -102, New York +3 at -114 and the total at 48. My prediction is Cowboys 27, Giants 24, with New York +3 at -114 the betting lean.

Bass Gets The Loudest First Assignment

Schottenheimer has been careful not to frame Bass as a crisis replacement. “He’s been preparing to play,” the coach said after Smith’s injury, while Bass himself said he always prepares as if he will be needed. That confidence is understandable: Bass already has 10 NFL starts.

The problem is the opponent. Burns finished 2025 with 16.5 sacks, while Carter enters Year 2 after flashing enough explosiveness to make protection rules uncomfortable even when Lawrence does not win inside.

The Dallas Cowboys therefore have a choice whenever those rushers threaten Prescott: keep additional protection attached, or trust Bass and the tackles long enough to release CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens into a secondary that is still settling under new coordinator Dennard Wilson.

Prescott’s Third Downs Begin Earlier

Dallas’ offensive identity explains why Tyler Smith’s absence matters before third down even arrives.

Schottenheimer said the Cowboys want to “live in third down and manageable.” Prescott was excellent when Dallas stayed ahead of the sticks last season, throwing for 4,552 yards while Pickens and Lamb both cleared 1,000 receiving yards.

A negative first-down run or interior pressure on second down changes that geometry. New York does not need to sack Prescott repeatedly. If Lawrence and the edge rushers create enough early disruption to turn third-and-4 into third-and-8, Wilson gains more freedom to disguise pressure and coverage.

Nabers Leaves Dallas One Unknown

The Giants have their own uncertainty. Malik Nabers practiced fully all week but is officially questionable as he continues working back from last season’s ACL injury. John Harbaugh said he believes Nabers is ready, yet Nabers himself stressed that the final decision depends on whether he feels his body is ready.

That distinction matters to Jaxson Dart. Dart threw 15 touchdowns against five interceptions as a rookie and added 487 rushing yards with nine scores. His movement already stresses linebackers; Nabers would force Dallas to defend the field’s width and depth at once.

Without Nabers, more of the passing load shifts toward Theo Johnson, Isaiah Likely and the rest of New York’s reconstructed receiving group.

Three Points Fit Both Risks

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line makes Dallas -3 at -102, with New York +3 at -114. Dallas is -160 on the moneyline; the Giants are +139.

Dallas owns the better proven passing structure, but the number asks Prescott to cover a field goal behind a line missing its best interior blocker against New York’s strongest defensive unit.

That is enough to create resistance without requiring the Giants to win outright.

Betting Analysis

Dallas can still produce explosive plays through Lamb and Pickens, especially if New York blitzes and leaves its corners isolated. The concern is whether enough drives reach those opportunities cleanly.

New York’s defensive front gives it a mechanism for keeping the game compressed, while Dart’s mobility offers another way to extend possessions if Dallas’ new defense fails to contain him.

Betting Lean

New York Giants +3 at -114.

Prediction: Dallas Cowboys 27, New York Giants 24.
