Cutelaba Left Sy an Unfinished Question

Oumar Sy returns in Paris with an unusually specific piece of unfinished business. Ion Cutelaba submitted him with a mounted guillotine in March, handing the Frenchman his second UFC loss and exposing what can happen when his size and wrestling initiative turn into a scramble he no longer controls. Sy has not ducked the lesson. This week he said experience “cannot be bought” and framed Saturday as a chance to demonstrate what he learned from the defeat.

Modestas Bukauskas is an awkward opponent for that examination because he intends to accelerate it. The Lithuanian said he plans to “take it to him,” rather than concede the outside to Sy’s 83-inch reach. That makes the central question immediate: can Sy use his length and wrestling without giving an experienced pressure fighter the chaotic exchanges that have already cost him?

Bukauskas Is Walking Toward the Reach

Sy is 6-foot-4 with an 83-inch reach; Bukauskas is 6-foot-3 with a 78-inch reach. The five-inch reach gap gives Sy obvious tools at kicking and straight-punching distance, but his more important advantage may appear once Bukauskas crosses that space. Sy has four submission wins and has shown he can blend takedowns with back control rather than functioning as a pure outside striker.

Bukauskas understands the trade. He called Sy well-rounded, specifically mentioning his versatile striking and wrestling, yet still said his plan is to put pressure on him. That is interesting because Bukauskas’ own UFC profile identifies kickboxing as his base, while his 82% takedown defense gives him a credible reason to trust himself when exchanges collapse into clinches.

Sy’s reach is useful only while he still owns the geography.

Sy Brought the Lesson Back Home

Sy’s two UFC defeats have asked different questions. Alonzo Menifield took him through three rounds in 2025; Cutelaba finished him in the first in March. Between them, Sy stopped Brendson Ribeiro in the opening round in Paris. His UFC record is therefore less a clean trajectory than a test of whether his considerable physical advantages survive against opponents who refuse to fight at his preferred pace.

Bukauskas brings more accumulated UFC time and a deeper set of uncomfortable rounds. He is 7-2 in his second UFC stint and most recently edged Christian Edwards by split decision after an opponent change. He said the quick turnaround suited him because he returned immediately to skill work. That matters here: he is not arriving in Paris hoping merely to survive Sy’s opening power. He expects to make Sy process pressure.

Our UFC Betting Guide explains why that distinction matters when a favorite owns the more explosive early pathways but the underdog has the stronger evidence over extended UFC minutes.

Eight First-Round Finishes Distort the Clock

Sy has eight first-round finishes among 12 victories; Bukauskas has eight of his own among 20 wins. The temptation is therefore to treat the fight as an automatic sprint. The styles suggest something subtler. Bukauskas’ best route is pressure without reckless level-change exposure, while Sy should benefit if he can repeatedly reset that pressure at long range.

Fight prediction: Oumar Sy by unanimous decision. His reach, wrestling threat, and home preparation give him enough layers to win minutes without chasing the kind of scramble that punished him against Cutelaba. Bukauskas’ durability, takedown defense, and experience make a quick finish less attractive than the favorite’s moneyline implies.

Sy vs Bukauskas Betting Analysis

Bookmaker Sportsbook lists Oumar Sy -235 and Modestas Bukauskas +195, with Over 2.5 rounds -157 and Under 2.5 +137.

Betting Lean: Over 2.5 rounds -157. The price is substantial, but it fits the matchup better than Sy’s finishing reputation suggests. Bukauskas has the defensive experience to extend the fight, while Sy has every incentive to show the Cutelaba lesson produced more control than urgency.
