Curtis Blaydes Has to Cross Waldo’s Range

Curtis Blaydes can wrestle Waldo Cortes-Acosta. The harder question is how he gets close enough to start.

Cortes-Acosta lands 5.54 significant strikes per minute, carries a 78-inch reach and defends 72% of attempted takedowns. Blaydes averages more than five takedowns per 15 minutes, but his wrestling only becomes relevant once he crosses the space where Waldo can jab, retreat and load the right hand.

Blaydes thinks he knows what is coming. At Wednesday’s media day, he described Cortes-Acosta as a “traditional heavyweight” committed to his overhand and said he has extensive experience facing this archetype.

The First Shot Is Only the Start

Curtis Blaydes’ best route is unlikely to be one clean takedown from open space. He needs to make Cortes-Acosta defend repeatedly: enter behind punches, reach the body, force him toward the fence, and turn the first stopped attempt into another wrestling exchange.

That distinction is crucial. Cortes-Acosta’s 72% takedown defense tells us he is difficult to put down. It does not tell us what happens after he has defended, remained connected to Blaydes and still needs to escape the cage.

Blaydes has completed 33 UFC takedowns and attempted 138. The volume is the weapon. One failed entry does not have to become a failed sequence.

Waldo Needs Space After the Sprawl

Cortes-Acosta’s advantage grows dramatically whenever he completes the entire defensive cycle.

Stuffing the shot is only part one. He then needs separation. At distance, his jab can interrupt Blaydes before the American plants his feet, while the right hand gives Blaydes a reason not to disguise every level change behind casual forward pressure. Cortes-Acosta also lands considerably more significant strikes per minute than Blaydes.

There is evidence that his takedown defense can survive heavyweight wrestling. Serghei Spivac went 0-for-2 against him. The useful lesson for Saturday is not the result of that fight, but that Cortes-Acosta can keep producing offense after being asked to defend his hips.

Curtis Blaydes nevertheless sees something simpler. He said Cortes-Acosta will “huck that overhand” and trust the power that has brought him success.

That confidence reveals his intended gamble: get through the dangerous part of Waldo’s offense without allowing its threat to discourage his own entries.

The UFC Betting Guide provides additional context for fights where wrestling pressure changes the value of striking statistics.

Curtis Blaydes Cannot Shoot From Anywhere

This matchup may ultimately be decided before either man touches the canvas. If Cortes-Acosta keeps Blaydes at the end of straight punches and forces naked shots from distance, the favorite can make him repeatedly reset. Every reset returns the fight to Waldo’s preferred geography.

If Blaydes makes Cortes-Acosta retreat toward the fence before changing levels, the equation reverses. Waldo loses room to circle, Blaydes can chain attempts, and minutes begin disappearing through positional work rather than striking exchanges.

That is why Cortes-Acosta’s defensive movement matters more than simply counting stuffed takedowns.

Blaydes has the wrestling to win this fight. I am less convinced he can consistently establish the range required to use it without paying for the entries.

Fight prediction: Waldo Cortes-Acosta by unanimous decision.

Betting Analysis

Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line makes Cortes-Acosta -205 and Blaydes +172, with Over 2.5 rounds -139 and Under 2.5 +119.

The favorite’s moneyline asks for a substantial premium when Blaydes still owns the clearest route to sustained positional dominance. The total better reflects the tactical problem. Blaydes has reasons to reduce open exchanges, while Cortes-Acosta has reasons to prioritize distance and clean exits rather than recklessly pursue a finish.
