Corbin Burnes Returns With Nine Innings Owed
Corbin Burnes’ return should be one of Arizona’s best developments of September. The timing makes Tuesday considerably more complicated.
Burnes will make his first major-league start since June 1, 2025, after Tommy John surgery and a subsequent teres-major strain delayed his recovery. His final tuneup consisted of roughly 53 pitches, with Burnes identifying 60 to 65 as the next target.
The Diamondbacks’ bullpen, meanwhile, covered nine scoreless innings Monday before Kansas City scored four in the 10th.
Bookmaker Sportsbook lists Arizona at -117, Kansas City +104 and the total at 9.5. My pick is Kansas City +104, with the Royals winning 5-4.
Sixty-Five Pitches Change Corbin Burnes’ Welcome
Burnes’ rehab evidence is encouraging. He threw two perfect innings for Triple-A Reno before completing his longer bridge-camp session Thursday. Most importantly, Burnes said he generated swings and misses with his cutter, sinker, curveball, slider and changeup while commanding the baseball.
He also dismissed concern about reduced velocity, arguing that location and pitch shape matter more than an extra mile per hour.
The unanswered question is length. If Burnes reaches roughly 60 to 65 pitches, Torey Lovullo could be asking his bullpen for significant outs one day after Derek Law, Jose Cabrera, Taylor Clarke, Brandyn Garcia and Justin Martinez combined for nine scoreless innings.

Wacha Can Make Monday Linger
Kansas City has the opposite starting-pitcher profile. Michael Wacha carries a 3.36 ERA and 1.10 WHIP through 176 2/3 innings. He has produced quality starts in eight of his past nine appearances, including eight scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts against Cleveland and six innings against Miami last Thursday.
Every additional inning Wacha keeps Arizona away from Kansas City’s bullpen increases the importance of how far Burnes can realistically take the Diamondbacks.
The MLB Playoffs Betting Guide provides additional context for assessing September games where roster availability can matter as much as season-long records.

Perdomo Removes One Late Question
The Diamondbacks at least enter Tuesday with no lingering concern about Geraldo Perdomo. The shortstop returned Monday after leaving Sunday’s game with a head contusion. Lovullo confirmed Perdomo never entered concussion protocol, while Perdomo said he felt OK.
That keeps an important piece of Arizona’s lineup available behind Burnes. The larger availability question remains on the mound, where Monday forced Lovullo deeper than he would have preferred before a starter expected to work a reduced workload.
The Name Is Bigger Than Workload
Arizona is -117, Kansas City +104, with the Diamondbacks -1.5 at +135. The total is 9.5, with Over +100 and Under -113.
Burnes’ return understandably improves Arizona’s outlook. It does not automatically make him equivalent to a fully stretched-out Burnes.
Wacha offers Kansas City the more predictable innings Tuesday, and Arizona’s bullpen workload makes that distinction unusually valuable.
