Corbin Burnes Gives Yankees Sixty Pitches

Corbin Burnes has thrown six major-league innings since Tommy John surgery. Somehow, the market has already decided what they mean. His 5.87 ERA is technically accurate and almost useless.

Burnes returned with three scoreless innings against Kansas City, then Miami scored four runs in three innings during his second start. Arizona is still rebuilding his workload, so Sunday is less about whether Burnes resembles a conventional starter than about how much damage New York can manufacture before he disappears. Aaron Judge will not be there to help.

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line has New York -111, Arizona -102 and the total at 8.5, with Yankees -1.5 +152 and Diamondbacks +1.5 -175. My pick is Arizona -102, with the Diamondbacks winning 5-3.

Corbin Burnes Has Not Reached Starterhood

Burnes’ return has deliberately arrived in pieces. His first start lasted 57 pitches. Arizona stretched him only to three innings again against Miami.

That makes the 5.87 ERA dangerous shorthand. Six innings after major elbow surgery tell us considerably less than the circumstances surrounding them.

Burnes’ curveball command was still inconsistent after his first outing, but his velocity and ability to miss bats held up after the surgery. Sunday’s question is whether another incremental workload increase will give Arizona four useful innings before the bullpen takes over.

Will Warren moves to cover first base during a previous professional New York baseball game

Warren Brings His Own Disguise

Will Warren’s 10-6 record and 3.89 ERA look ordinary beside the Yankees’ louder rotation names. His recent work does not.

Warren enters with a 1.38 ERA across his previous five appearances. That changes the shape of Arizona’s afternoon because waiting for New York’s bullpen may require surviving a starter currently conceding very little.

But Warren does not arrive behind the Yankees lineup Arizona expected to see this weekend. Judge is on the injured list with a right calf strain. Spencer Jones was also held out Saturday with soreness in his left foot and heel, leaving New York’s outfield depth under unusual late-season pressure.

Saturday Just Taxed New York’s Escape Hatch

Arizona’s ninth-inning win on Saturday provided more than momentum. It made New York use the bullpen.

Luke Weaver, David Bednar and Michael Fulmer all appeared after Cam Schlittler’s six innings, with Fulmer surrendering Pavin Smith’s walk-off homer.

That matters because Burnes’ workload virtually guarantees Arizona will ask several relievers to work Sunday. New York’s usual answer to a short opposing starter is to extend the game until the softer innings appear. This time, its own bullpen arrives carrying Saturday’s fingerprints.

Minus 102 Buys the Unfinished Version

Burnes is not yet Corbin Burnes in the traditional seven-inning sense. Arizona does not require him to be.

At -102, the Diamondbacks are being asked to survive Warren, extract another controlled chunk from Burnes and turn the afternoon over before his workload becomes the story.

The Yankees are almost paying even money for the privilege of discovering how much Corbin Burnes has returned.
