Colorado’s Season Has Reached the Point Where Urgency Is No Longer Optional
The schedule has become part of the pressure now. Colorado had two home games to establish the rhythm of the Western Conference Final, and Vegas left Denver with both of them. Game 2 made that damage sharper because the Avalanche did more than lose 3-1. They built the type of first-period lead that should have allowed them to settle, then watched Vegas turn patience, depth, and third-period execution into a 2-0 series advantage.
Ross Colton’s opening goal gave Colorado the start it needed, and the Avalanche spent long stretches of the second period generating the better pressure. The weakness was finishing. Colorado created enough zone time to make Vegas uncomfortable, but not enough interior conversion to separate. Carter Hart’s 29-save performance kept the Golden Knights alive, and once the third period arrived, Vegas turned one narrow lane into full control.
Jack Eichel tied the game, Ivan Barbashev scored the winner less than two minutes later, and Barbashev added the empty-net goal that made the final score feel colder than the game had been. Vegas played without Mark Stone, Colorado again missed Cale Makar, and those absences shaped the tactical balance. The Golden Knights survived without their captain by leaning into layered defensive support. The Avalanche missed Makar’s breakout precision, power-play command, and ability to tilt possession before pressure became dangerous.
That is why Colorado’s Game 2 pressure point became a third-period warning matter for Game 3. The previous article framed Colorado’s slow-start risk, but Game 2 exposed something more severe. The Avalanche did start better. They still failed to turn that start into control.
Game 3 is scheduled for May 24 at 8:00 PM Eastern Time in Las Vegas. Colorado are -143, Vegas are +127, and the total is set at 6. The line still gives Colorado the stronger side designation, but the series score has changed the emotional math completely.

Colorado’s Shot Volume Has Not Become Scoreboard Control
Nathan MacKinnon remains the central problem Vegas must solve, but the Golden Knights have done a strong job forcing his best work into difficult layers of the ice. Colorado can still generate rush pressure, but Vegas are making the Avalanche earn second and third touches through bodies rather than clean seams.
That matters because Colorado’s supporting forwards have not punished Vegas enough. Colton delivered in Game 2, but the Avalanche need more from their high-end attacking group if they are going to justify road favoritism while trailing 2-0.
At -143, Bookmaker Sportsbook linesmakers are still respecting Colorado’s ceiling rather than reacting entirely to the series deficit. That is dangerous territory for bettors. The Avalanche have the talent to flip a game quickly, but the price asks them to solve a Vegas team that has already beaten them twice in Denver.

Vegas Are Winning the Patience Battle
Vegas have not needed perfect hockey to control this series. That may be the most important takeaway. The Golden Knights absorbed pressure in Game 2, trusted Hart, protected the middle, and waited for Colorado’s margin to shrink.
Eichel’s influence has been especially important because he is not just producing. He is helping Vegas exit pressure without panic. Barbashev gives the Golden Knights the heavier finishing profile Colorado have lacked in key moments, while Pavel Dorofeyev’s production has added another layer to a forward group already comfortable playing playoff hockey in tight spaces.
This matchup belongs in the NHL Betting Hub because it shows how playoff odds can stay attached to roster ceiling even after the actual series rhythm has moved elsewhere. Colorado may still be the more explosive team, but Vegas have been the more complete situational team.
Game 3 Is No Longer About Talent Alone
The total at 6 reflects the tension between Colorado’s desperation and Vegas’ control. If the Avalanche score first again, the game can still open. If Vegas get the first goal, Colorado’s pressure may become rushed, and that is when the Golden Knights’ counterattacking layers become more dangerous.
The NHL Betting Guide is useful here because postseason betting often punishes anyone leaning too heavily on reputation. Colorado’s stars can still win this game, but the first two games showed a team struggling to turn territorial pressure into decisive scoreboard separation.
The risk with backing Vegas is obvious. Colorado’s urgency should be extreme, and a desperate Avalanche team still has enough speed, shooting talent, and transition force to overwhelm a game in ten minutes. If Makar returns, the entire breakout and power-play structure changes.
Even so, Vegas at plus money now carries the cleaner betting argument.

The Pick
The pick is Vegas Golden Knights moneyline at +127.
Colorado are dangerous enough to justify respect, and their desperation is the main risk. But Vegas have already shown the better late-game structure, the more reliable finishing under pressure, and the stronger ability to survive momentum swings. Getting the Golden Knights at home, up 2-0, at plus money is too strong to pass.
