Cloé Lacasse Tests Houston’s Missing Cover
Houston’s absences matter most because of where Cloé Lacasse can make them hurt. Defender Malia Berkely is unavailable, while Sophie Schmidt’s absence removes an experienced midfield presence in front of the back line. Evelina Duljan and Makenzy Robbe are also out, and Linda Ullmark remains away with the U.S. U-20 team. The cumulative effect leaves the Dash with fewer established options to contain a Utah attack that has scored 18 goals in its last eight matches.
Lacasse is the player most capable of testing that disruption. Her seven goals and 10 assists come from more than finishing moves: she can carry the ball into the final third, draw defenders toward her and release teammates into the space that movement creates.
That gives Houston an immediate choice. Step toward Cloé Lacasse early and risk opening lanes around her, or protect those spaces and allow Utah’s most productive attacker more room to advance.
Utah face the opposite danger. Committing extra numbers to exploit Houston’s altered defensive structure can create transition opportunities for Kat Rader at the other end.
Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line: Houston Dash +155, Utah Royals FC +154, draw +250. The total opened at 2.5 goals, over -145 and under +108. On the level-ball handicap, Houston are -114 and Utah -116. My lean is over 2.5 goals at -145.
Ten Assists Have Changed the Trap
Cloé Lacasse is no longer dangerous only when she is the player finishing the move. Her 10 assists have tied the NWSL single-season record entering the weekend, while Utah has scored 18 goals across its last eight matches. That production makes Houston’s defensive choice uncomfortable.
Closing Cloé Lacasse aggressively can release runners around her. Giving her space allows her to carry the ball directly toward the box.
Utah added another variable this week by signing Jameese Joseph from Chicago. Her pace and movement give Jimmy Coenraets another attacking option alongside Kiana Palacios, Mina Tanaka and Lacasse.

Houston Still Has a Home Answer
Three consecutive road defeats make Houston’s current form look worse than its home profile. The Dash have lost only three of their last 16 regular-season matches at Shell Energy Stadium dating back to August 2025. Their young attack also remains capable of punishing Utah if too many players move forward at once.
Rader is the clearest reason. The rookie has nine league goals, leads Houston with 24 shots on target and 32 chances created, and had another effort ruled out against Orlando last weekend. Kiki Van Zanten then scored Houston’s only goal in the 3-1 defeat.
Utah’s attack therefore carries its own consequences. Every extra body committed around Lacasse leaves another transition for Rader to attack.

Boston Found Utah’s Other Problem
Utah’s 2-1 loss to Boston exposed why the over interests me more than the Royals moneyline.
The Royals equalized quickly through Palacios but still conceded an 86th-minute winner. Their recent form has been volatile: eight straight matches alternating between wins and losses despite continued attacking output. Houston can exploit that volatility.
Utah have the cleaner availability report and the more productive attack, but the Dash return home with Rader capable of turning one broken sequence into a shot before Utah’s shape resets.
The first meeting finished 2-0 to Utah, with Lacasse scoring and Tanaka supplying two assists. Saturday presents a different version of the matchup. Houston are thinner defensively, Utah are creating more goals, and both sides possess attackers capable of exploiting the space created by the other’s aggression.
At -145, the price on over 2.5 is not generous. The matchup still points there more clearly than either moneyline.
Betting lean: Over 2.5 goals at -145.
