Cincinnati Open WTA Preview: Xiyu Wang Got a Day Off. Madison Keys Got Something Better.

Madison Keys and Xiyu Wang arrived in the Cincinnati Open Round of 16 by very different routes.

Keys played 55 minutes against Katerina Siniakova and won 6-1, 6-3. She faced three break points and saved all three, won 79% of her first-serve points and 70% behind the second serve. Wang was preparing to face Elina Svitolina until the Ukrainian withdrew with the ankle injury she had aggravated in her previous match.

Keys played 55 minutes and lost 13 points on serve. That’s barely enough time to unpack the racket bag.

For Wang, the question is whether fresh legs can compensate for entering a match against one of the WTA tour’s heaviest hitters without having struck a competitive ball since her previous round.

Madison Keys Finally Has a WTA 1000 Run

Cincinnati has interrupted an awkward pattern in Keys’ season. The American had not advanced beyond the third round of a WTA 1000 this year before beating Siniakova. Her overall season has been considerably stronger: the WTA lists her at 29-11, and she won Eastbourne in June. She is also back at the tournament where she won the title in 2019.

Against Siniakova, the key number wasn’t the 11 winners. It was zero breaks conceded. Keys landed only 51% of first serves but won 19 of 24 points when the first delivery went in. More unusually, she won 16 of 23 second-serve points. Siniakova therefore had very few chances to establish return pressure even when the first serve missed.

Wang’s left-handed return gives Keys a different geometry. Returns from that side can change Keys’ first forehand position and force Her to adjust her feet before attacking.

Xiyu Wang’s Season Has Already Changed Shape

Wang’s ranking history tells its own story. She was No. 226 in early March. By late June she had climbed to No. 86, helped by a run to the fourth round at Roland Garros and a WTA 125 final in Brescia. The WTA lists her 2026 record at 32-6.

The left-handed forehand is her most useful shot against Keys because of where it sends the American.

Crosscourt exchanges pull Keys towards the backhand corner. If Wang can find enough depth there, Keys has to strike while moving rather than planting her feet and unloading through the middle of the court.

Keys will attack anything shorter. At 5-foot-11, Wang also has enough reach and serving leverage to avoid beginning every service point defensively. She cannot afford repeated second serves into Keys’ strike zone.

Eastbourne Offers One Useful Clue

They have met once. Keys beat Wang 6-2, 7-6(3) at Eastbourne in 2023 on her way to winning the tournament. Wang was a qualifier ranked No. 73; Keys was No. 25.

The scoreline changed substantially after the first set. Wang found enough depth and serving stability to take the second into a tiebreak. Keys still won without dropping a set, then continued through Petra Martic, Coco Gauff and Daria Kasatkina to lift the trophy.

Three years later, Cincinnati gives Keys more help than a slow hard court would. Her flat groundstrokes penetrate quickly, particularly when she can establish position on or inside the baseline.

Wang’s task starts before those shots arrive. Serve placement and return depth have to keep Keys from taking the first comfortable swing.

For readers using the Tennis Betting Hub, the WTA Betting Guide offers useful context for a favorite priced this heavily. The moneyline asks only who wins. A 4.5-game handicap asks how much resistance Wang can create before Keys establishes control of the baseline.

Madison Keys vs Xiyu Wang Betting Analysis

Bookmaker Sportsbook makes Keys a substantial -400 favorite, with Wang at +298. The handicap places Keys at -4.5 games (-123) and Wang at +4.5 (+100). The total is 20.5 games, with the over at -106 and the under at -115.

Keys’ -400 moneyline leaves little room for discovery.

The handicap is more interesting. Keys has just produced a 6-1, 6-3 performance in which she protected both first and second serve exceptionally well. Wang enters rested, but the walkover also removed a match that would have given her another opportunity to adjust to Cincinnati’s pace.

Betting Lean

Keys’ serve and first groundstroke can compress this match quickly. Wang’s best route to extending it is through the left-handed forehand and enough return depth to keep Keys behind the baseline.

The -4.5 line requires two breaks of separation across the match rather than merely a Keys victory.

Betting Lean: Madison Keys -4.5 games (-123)

Projected Score: Madison Keys 6-3, 6-3
