CF Montreal Finds Charlotte Without Westwood

CF Montréal does not need another abstract discussion about improvement. Philippe Eullaffroy said this week that a squad he believes contains enough quality must now demonstrate it, and Wednesday offers an unusually specific opportunity: Charlotte FC arrives without the midfielder who has directed almost every league minute of its season.

Ashley Westwood is suspended after receiving two yellow cards for dissent against Houston. Charlotte remains unbeaten in five, but now has to preserve that run without its captain at the center of the team. CF Montréal, meanwhile, returns to Stade Saputo after consecutive MLS defeats.

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line makes Montréal +133, Charlotte +180 and the draw +266. Charlotte is +0.5 at -157, with Montréal -0.5 at +130. Pick: Charlotte FC +0.5 (-157).

Westwood Leaves More Than Minutes

Westwood had been on the field for all but 183 of Charlotte’s available league minutes before his latest suspension. He also captains Dean Smith’s side and was selected for the 2026 MLS All-Star Game alongside Pep Biel and Tim Ream.

That makes Wednesday less about identifying a theoretical weakness than watching how Charlotte redistributes an established responsibility.

Smith has Luca de la Torre and Brandt Bronico available among his midfield options, while Djibril Diani started alongside Westwood against Houston. What cannot be assumed is that the replacement reproduces Westwood’s influence automatically.

Sánchez Arrives at the Vacancy

Alexis Sánchez made his first CF Montréal start in Saturday’s 2-0 loss at Philadelphia. He joined the club in August as a Designated Player, giving Eullaffroy another experienced attacking option precisely when Montréal’s league position has become difficult to ignore.

Eullaffroy has publicly rejected the idea that the squad lacks sufficient talent. His challenge has been converting that talent into results. Montréal has won five of 23 league matches and enters Wednesday last in the Eastern Conference.

The timing makes Westwood’s absence relevant without making it decisive. Montréal still has to show it can turn possession and promising moments into enough sustained pressure to exploit Charlotte’s altered midfield.

Five Unbeaten Matches Change the Price

Charlotte’s case is not built entirely around surviving one suspension.

Smith’s team is fifth in the Eastern Conference and unbeaten in its last five matches. Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Houston extended that run even after Westwood’s dismissal left Charlotte with 10 players for the final stretch.

CF Montréal enters from the opposite direction. The 2-0 loss in Philadelphia followed a 7-1 defeat at Inter Miami, although a 1-1 Canadian Championship draw in Vancouver sat between them.

There are additional absences on both sides. MLS lists Frankie Amaya, Josh-Duc Nteziryayo and Jalen Neal out for CF Montréal, while Charlotte will also be without Nimfasha Berchimas, Aron John and Harry Toffolo.

Westwood’s suspension narrows Charlotte’s margin, but Montréal still has to prove that one missing midfielder outweighs the larger difference in current league form.

At -157, Charlotte +0.5 is expensive. It also requires only a draw from a team that has avoided defeat in five straight matches against an opponent still searching for evidence that its available quality can become points.

Charlotte FC +0.5 (-157) is the betting lean.
