César Perdomo Gives San Diego a New Puzzle

César Perdomo has thrown only 10 major-league innings. That tiny sample is precisely what makes Saturday awkward for San Diego.

The 24-year-old left-hander has allowed one earned run with a 0.80 WHIP, and his first MLB start produced six scoreless innings. Michael King offers considerably more certainty on the other side: a 3.00 ERA across 168 innings with 144 strikeouts.

Bookmaker Sportsbook’s opening line makes San Diego -163 and San Francisco +144, with Padres -1.5 at +110 and the total at 7.5. The pick is San Diego Padres -1.5 at +110.

César Perdomo’s Ten Innings Hide the Problem

A 0.90 ERA is impressive. It is not yet predictive. Perdomo has made two major-league appearances and only one start. His six scoreless innings against the Mets showed that his stuff can survive a major-league lineup, but San Diego now gets the benefit of scouting a pitcher whose first-start novelty has begun to disappear.

The more revealing number sits below the MLB line. Across the minors this season, César Perdomo worked 120 innings with a 4.43 ERA and 125 strikeouts.

That does not invalidate his September improvement. It does warn against treating 10 innings as evidence that San Francisco has suddenly uncovered a sub-1.00 ERA starter.

San Diego also projects to send several important right-handed bats into this matchup, including Fernando Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts and Manny Machado. Their ability to force Perdomo into deeper counts could expose the difference between an intriguing rookie and a starter capable of navigating a lineup repeatedly.

King Can Keep San Francisco Chasing

King gives San Diego a very different starting-pitching proposition. His 3.00 ERA has been built across 29 starts rather than a September cameo, while opponents are hitting only .213 against him. The underlying attraction Saturday is his ability to limit clean contact while still missing enough bats to escape traffic.

That matters against a Giants lineup carrying more genuine power than its record suggests. Rafael Devers remains the obvious danger, while Bryce Eldridge adds another left-handed threat capable of changing an inning with one swing.

King’s broader body of work reduces the probability that San Francisco receives repeated opportunities with runners aboard.

Friday Took Something From the Ninth

The Padres won Friday, but Saturday begins with one piece of bullpen information that matters.

Mason Miller threw 31 pitches while recording the final four outs. He allowed a hit and three walks before escaping with his 35th save. That workload makes his Saturday availability materially less comfortable than it was entering the series opener.

San Diego therefore has greater incentive for King to carry meaningful innings and for the offense to create separation before the late innings.

César Perdomo’s early MLB work deserves respect, but the price still gives too much weight to a 10-inning sample. King supplies the stronger foundation, and San Diego’s right-handed core gives Perdomo his most revealing test yet.

San Diego Padres -1.5 at +110 is the betting position.
