Casey Mize Inherits San Diego’s Momentum
Casey Mize gets something Nick Pivetta did not have Monday: a normal workload.
That distinction gives San Diego a different route through Tuesday. Mize brings a 3.64 ERA into a matchup with Riley Cornelio, whose 5.96 ERA leaves Washington needing considerably more protection from its offense and bullpen. The Padres also enter with Mason Miller having worked consecutive days, making Mize’s ability to carry innings particularly valuable.
Bookmaker Sportsbook opening line makes San Diego -186 and Washington +163. The Padres -1.5 pays +117, while Washington +1.5 is -133 and the total is 7.5. The betting lean is San Diego Padres -1.5 at +117.
Casey Mize Can Keep Miller Seated
Monday’s pitching plan worked almost exactly as San Diego intended. Pivetta provided five scoreless innings in his return from a five-month elbow absence before the Padres turned the game over to their relief corps. Mason Miller eventually recorded his 34th save, one day after earning No. 33 against the Yankees.
That creates Tuesday’s first meaningful constraint. Miller has now pitched on consecutive days. Whether Craig Stammen makes him available for a third straight appearance remains uncertain, so Mize’s length becomes more valuable than his ERA alone suggests.

Cornelio Gives San Diego an Opening
Cornelio enters with a 5.96 ERA and 23 strikeouts, giving San Diego a much different starting-pitcher target than Washington faced Monday. MLB lists him at 2-2 entering Tuesday.
The Padres’ lineup also has a useful pressure point emerging around Jackson Merrill. He produced three hits and drove in two runs Monday, while Manny Machado supplied the other San Diego RBI.
The point is not what happened Monday. It is what Washington now has to prevent. If Cornelio allows traffic ahead of Machado and Merrill, San Diego has an opportunity to create the separation required by the run line before bullpen availability becomes the dominant issue.

One Run Is the Price
The Padres’ moneyline at -186 is unattractive for a reason. San Diego hasn’t consistently created comfortable margins, and Monday’s 3-2 result showed how quickly a game can tighten even after the Padres establish an early advantage. Washington also has enough top-of-order power through James Wood, Dylan Crews, and CJ Abrams to punish Mize if his command deteriorates.
But the run line changes the proposition. San Diego -1.5 at +117 converts a substantial moneyline premium into plus money while backing the clearer starting-pitching advantage. Mize does not need to dominate. He needs to keep Cornelio from receiving enough scoreboard protection to turn this into another one-run bullpen game.
The principal risk is Miller’s workload. If San Diego carries only a narrow lead into the late innings and Stammen avoids his closer after consecutive appearances, the Padres may have to protect it with a different relief configuration.
That risk is preferable to laying -186.
San Diego Padres -1.5 at +117 is the betting position.
