Bryce Miller’s Return Changes Boston’s Equation

Bryce Miller was supposed to be Seattle’s bullpen reinforcement. Emerson Hancock’s adductor injury has instead pushed him back toward the rotation, and that changes the shape of Wednesday’s matchup. Miller enters with a 4.12 ERA, but his recent starts have been considerably rougher: Seattle lost each of his last eight starts while he went 0-6 with a 7.19 ERA.

Boston counters with Patrick Sandoval, who has allowed only three earned runs across 11 innings in his last two starts. The left-hander still carries a 1.71 WHIP, however, leaving traffic as the vulnerability Seattle can attack.

Bookmaker Sportsbook’s opening line makes Boston a -133 moneyline favorite, with Seattle at +117 and the total at 8.5. Pick: Boston Red Sox -133.

Seven Walks Changed Bryce Miller’s Job

Miller’s last start before the bullpen move exposed the problem behind his season numbers. He allowed only two hits against the Cubs on August 23, yet seven walks helped produce six earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. His previous two outings produced another 10 earned runs over 10 2/3 innings.

Seattle then shifted him to relief, and Miller acknowledged he was ready to help there, even though he wasn’t enthusiastic about making the move permanent. Hancock’s injury changed the calculation.

That makes Fenway a difficult place to rediscover command. Boston has also just returned Roman Anthony and Trevor Story from lengthy injuries, restoring two lineup options at precisely the moment Miller needs clean innings rather than extended counts and baserunners.

Sandoval Has One Number to Beat

Sandoval’s recent run has been cleaner. He held the Yankees to three hits and one run over 5 1/3 innings on August 28 after allowing two runs across 5 2/3 innings against San Francisco. He struck out 13 across those two outings.

The problem is baserunner suppression. Sandoval has walked 16 hitters in 26 August innings and finished the month with a 1.81 WHIP. Seattle also arrives with Lazaro Montes adding another left-handed power bat; the 21-year-old said after his MLB debut that he considers himself a hitter with power rather than simply a power hitter.

The MLB Playoffs Betting Guide provides additional context for evaluating September games, when roster management and postseason positioning begin to influence pitching decisions.

Boston’s bullpen is not at full strength. Tyron Guerrero joined Justin Slaten on the injured list, although Garrett Whitlock has returned. That is the primary risk to laying -133. Still, Miller’s recent command deterioration creates the more immediate exposure. Boston does not need Sandoval to dominate. It needs him to leave fewer fires behind than Miller. Boston -133 is the lean.
