Boston Won Game 1. Sonny Gray Gets the Bill

Sonny Gray gets Yankee Stadium with considerably less behind him than Payton Tolle had. Boston survived Game 1 by asking Garrett Whitlock for 24 pitches and Aroldis Chapman for 31. Chapman escaped a ninth inning that required 21 pitches alone.

Now Gray gets Max Fried. That turns Game 2 into something harsher than another elite pitching matchup. Boston’s cleanest route to October just became considerably narrower: Gray has to keep New York from reaching the part of the game where bullpen depth starts collecting debts.

Bookmaker Sportsbook‘s opening line has New York -134 and Boston +119, with the total at 6.5. My pick is Yankees -134, with New York winning 4-2.

Sonny Gray Gets the Bullpen Tolle Spent

Boston’s Game 1 relief plan worked. It also left fingerprints everywhere. Whitlock entered for the eighth and threw 24 pitches. Chapman required 31 to finish the ninth. Neither workload automatically removes them Wednesday, but Chad Tracy now has to weigh effectiveness against consecutive-day usage in an elimination game.

Sonny Gray carries more than his own innings. The right-hander finished the regular season with a 3.42 ERA and gives Boston veteran strike-throwing against a lineup that can punish free traffic.

Fried Gets Judge Without the Alibi

Aaron Judge played in Game 1. That removes the uncertainty that hung over Tuesday. The calf remains part of his physical context, but his presence changes what Fried is protecting. New York can build around Judge rather than preparing alternate versions of the lineup, while Fried gives Aaron Boone a starter who finished 18-5 with a 2.86 ERA.

Boston doesn’t get Tolle’s unfamiliarity this time. Fried has October experience, length and a Yankees bullpen that did not have to record an out Tuesday.

Boston’s Best Escape Is Fried Himself

The favorite is not invulnerable. Boston can attack Fried from the right side and force New York into the bullpen earlier than Boone wants. Trevor Story and Alex Bregman give the Red Sox hitters who can change an inning without building one patiently.

But that route has to arrive before Sonny Gray’s own margin begins shrinking.

Minus 134 Buys the Fresh Innings

The market asks New York to win, not cover. That matters.

Gray can absolutely keep this close enough to make +119 tempting, particularly with another 6.5 total. But Boston’s late-inning advantage is less certain 24 hours after Whitlock and Chapman combined for 55 pitches. New York has Fried and a fresher bullpen.

At -134, that’s enough separation.
