Bondar Tests the Margin Around Madison Keys

Madison Keys does not need more power against Anna Bondar. She needs cleaner access to it. Keys survived an awkward US Open opener against Alina Korneeva 7-5, 6-4, but the score concealed a volatile service performance. She held only seven of 11 service games, landed 57% of her first serves and committed five double faults. Her advantage came when rallies opened up: Keys produced 21 winners to Korneeva’s seven and converted six of eight break points.

That makes Thursday’s problem unusually specific. Bondar does not have to overpower Keys. She needs to keep making the American strike another ball until Keys’ aggression begins producing errors instead of winners.

Bookmaker Sportsbook’s line makes Keys a massive -1111 favorite, with Bondar at +671. The more interesting number is the game spread: Keys -5.5 at -125. Pick: Madison Keys -5.5 (-125).

Bondar Can Make This Uncomfortable

Bondar arrives after a controlled 6-3, 6-3 win over qualifier Lucie Havlickova. She was broken twice but created 13 break opportunities herself, converting five, and won 42% of her return points.

That return pressure matters because Keys has already shown the crack Bondar needs.

Against Korneeva, Keys’ first-serve percentage sat at only 48% in the opening set before climbing to nearly 70% in the second. If Bondar can repeatedly force Keys to begin points behind a second serve, the favorite may have to generate her separation from neutral rallies rather than immediate first-strike control.

There is also evidence Bondar can stay attached to Keys for stretches. Their only previous meeting came in Charleston in April, where Madison Keys won 6-2, 7-5. That result is useful here not as history for history’s sake, but because the tighter second set shows the danger in assuming Keys’ superior weight of shot automatically produces a runaway score.

Can Madison Keys Remove Her Own Resistance?

Keys was unusually candid about the tension surrounding her opening match. “You can kind of feel it as the days are getting closer,” she said before describing players becoming anxious as their first rounds approach. Keys subsequently acknowledged those nerves remained very real even after advancing.

Thursday presents a different psychological problem. The first-round hurdle is gone. Now Keys carries a price that leaves virtually no room for the market to be impressed merely by advancement.

Her 2026 season supports the gap between the players. Keys entered the US Open with a 33-14 record and a title this season, while Bondar has done much of her strongest work on clay and entered New York with a 9-10 hard-court record for the year.

The WTA Betting Guide provides additional context for assessing game handicaps when a heavy favorite offers little appeal on the moneyline.

The risk is Keys’ serve. Four lost service games against Korneeva would make covering six games considerably harder if repeated, particularly against a player who generated 13 break points in her opener.

But Keys does not need flawless tennis to create the required margin. She needs enough first serves to prevent Bondar from consistently starting rallies on even terms. Once Keys controls the first strike, the disparity in offensive weight becomes difficult for Bondar to absorb over two sets.

Keys -5.5 (-125) is the betting lean.
